Rite of passage for mine. The summer holidays after they finished infants they went to the shop to spend their pocket money. Always made a fuss if I wanted them to nip up and get something for me though!!

 

We used to live in a cardboard box in t'midlle of t'road

 

As someone says. Different times. I started at pit at 15yrs of age. Underground at 16. ( first yr full time at college) Honestly can’t remember if I was left at home cos I loved holidays and would insist on going. (Blackpool the main destination)
I did once go with a couple of mates who 1 of which. parents were present.
I probably had my first holiday without my parents. 17/18yrs with my now, missus.

But it wasn’t uncommon to be left to your own devises at 15 and certainly not frowned upon. Neighbours were always there to make sure all was alright.

Btw. Best holidays I’ve ever had was inviting my aged parents to holiday with us. It made it for us. But mainly for them.

When I was 16 (early 70s) my mam worked the evening shift at Bassets and when my dad was on lates at the pit I was on my own when I got in from school till he got home at 10pm. I even had to make his dinner. It never did me any harm.

No it didn't Helen. Adulthood or coming of age as it was known was 21, key of the door and all that.

 

Officially maybe but you were smoking, drinking , legally having sex , working much younger.

 

You can have sex at 16 but if you record it and watch it back it's illegal.
