Sitting watching Hannah Cockroft's second Gold medal, and remembering how a few years ago, Disability Sport Yorkshire loaned her first racing wheelchair, I thought it was about time I updated people on the totals for the sponsored walk. Not that her success is anything directly to do with us (we deal with grass roots rather than elite), but it's good to see that the path people start on can bear fruit. Anyway, I digress. Up to now, the good people of Barnsley, the walkers, their friends and families have raised around £1500 for DSY as a result of the walk. This is a great result for us. For anyone who heard any of the radio Sheffield interviews, the biggest problem for us as an organisation is getting "unrestricted funding" - the stuff grant makers don't want to give. The day to day costs etc. By helping raise these funds, we have fought off a few "fires" so to speak so that we can get on with the stuff our funders like. Not only does it (indirectly) keep me and the staff in a job a little longer, but more importantly, it enables the charity to deliver on the projects it is funded to deliver.... the ones that make massive differences to peoples lives. We are expecting a couple of other donations to come in, so maybe we'll be nearer £2000. Anyway, I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone involved, and everyone who donated. There are reasons to be optimistic again for our charity, and hopefully if things come off, I'll be back on here with more good news. The publicity generated has helped a great deal, and we have a few very promising "irons in the fire". Fingers crossed. Thanks again.
