Any point them continuing? The weather is going to ruin the last two days and few are going to tune in to see a match where draw is the only outcome. Pakistan in their interests would try and set a total maybe with a double declaration but England won't agree to that. The rules for test cricket need to be looked at before it dies off or TV/Radio contracts go down in value. Yesterday should have got some play and didn't. With floodlights on matches should continue until all the overs in the day are completed. Pink balls need to start being used when the alternative is to leave the field.
I'd not really considered that and I agree that ordinarily, 1 up in a 3-game series, England wouldn't agree but I wonder if the special circumstances and the efforts everyone has put in to get test cricket to be played again might be a factor here. 200-250 is a reasonable target that gives both sides a chance and the players and pundits have been saying for the last few days that the fans deserve to see a better spectacle. You might be onto something, DB3K. Alternatively, they may feel that letting the match drift into an avoidable non-event might force the hands of the powers that be to introduce more flexibility, as you suggest.
Whenever they go get back out on the field I would expect Pakistan to have at least declared. England won't take the risk of it going 1-1 but Pakistan would want to set a total so they can still win the series. If they don't come to an agreement there is no point tuning in to watch it.
Never going to happen. It’s already in the rules to forfeit an innings. It’s happened on numerous occasions in the history of Test Cricket. Both of you are ignoring the fact that the Test Championship is in play so it’s important you win the series. With only one test to play after this England will be a no lose situation.
We know, that's why we're talking about it. I appreciate that it's important to win the series, I'm just opining that there might be something more important at stake here. I agree that it's very unlikely to happen.
Draw is obviously huge favourite. At 1 nil up there is no way on earth there will be a contrived result, and probably not enough time for Pakistan to set up a winning position.... unless they score a few quick runs and then bowl us out for 50 this morning!
Maybe if the Test Championship included bowling and batting points like in the County Championship it would add a little more meaning. There would still be points to play for even in the event of a draw.
Longer windows for matches to be played in so we don't lose play. For example a five day match is just that if weather permits. Maximum overs calculated over 5 days and allow 7 days for lost play. (They used to have a rest day.)
England already 1.0 in a 3 match Test series. No way will they forfeit an innings to try and get a result. They don't need to. They can't be at fault if the weather and umpires have dictated not much play has been possible in the first 3 days. All rules and guidelines have been followed from what I can see. All the commentary has been around the umpires and that they should have bent the rules to have allowed more play in. Imaging the furore if they had and England were in a losing position! They can't win. That also isn't their job. They remain impartial at all times and follow the rules as set out by the ICC. Thankfully, there has been no paying spectators. All they can do is look at changing the rules and guidelines moving forward. Which is what the ICC is there for.
This is me having a moan but they've just filled that time with pointless one day thrashes that have next to no context or meaning. Can anyone remember what one day series we played in 2019 or what the results were? And yes, I know they bring crowds in so I'm probably out of step.
The World Cup and we won it With regards the rest of the thread, don't judge the outcome until both sides have had a bowl - I'd suggest owt' could happen with this amount of movement and in those conditions.
I do seem to recall Ben Stokes having a decent game in a one dayer last summer? Can’t for the life of me remember what it was.... I’m a big test cricket fan, watching now just as it’s going to rain.... to me it’s the best format. But one day and t20 stuff is massively popular too - so there has to be room for them. It isn’t all about the longer form. And the shorter games attract youngsters to the game a lot easier than test cricket with its maiden overs and bad light, both as fans and as players.
Yes, I walked right into the World Cup response didn't I? But you get my point I think. I don't even have a massive issue with one dayers. It's all club cricketers ever play and I go to watch them here in Kerry whenever it stops flippin raining. They all have a larger context though, a league or cup title at the end of it. I assume there'll be a one day series against Pakistan this summer. In 12 months time it will be forgotten about because it's virtually meaningless. Kids have always been attracted to cricket by going and seeing it at their local club or on the tv. Whether it's Test or One day I don't think makes much difference. What is sad is that live cricket is now so rare on free to air tv.
Football, rugby, golf, hockey etc all play in the rain why can’t the public school boys of cricket do the same
Seriously need to explain to you how throwing a hard ball at human beings is dangerous when the ball and the ground is wet. Have you tried bowling or throwing a ball when the ball and your hands are wet? Do you know where the ball would go? Would you be able to live with yourself if you gave another player a life threatening injury?
You are forgetting the main fact that you couldn’t keep the wicket dry, if you played in the rain. The thing that allows the ball to bounce.
