Genuine question.Does anybody really know who picks the players?.When Patrick was questioned about this under Dannys tenure he got quite upset that people thought that his son and others were choosing players for his manager.I think his words were "do you think a manager of Dannys standing would let others pick which players to sign".I would like to think that P.H says which players he wants and the ceo then gets the deal over the line.A manager as got to be accountable for the good and bad times if he doesn't sign his own players this can't happen.I maybe old school but I want my manager to scout and sign players who HE thinks are right and good enough for our team.
The issue I think is that he may only allowed to pick players from the spreadsheet.... Which limits him somewhat.
You might like to think it but what happens is that the recruitment team identify the targets using statistics ( the “spreadsheet”) and then the head coach picks from this list. DW wasn’t totally operating under this method and as such was allowed to name players he wanted to sign in the method you mentioned. If you listen to Hecky part of his gripe is that we haven’t been signing the types of player he thinks we need
The "plan" is to identify players based on statistics. That model will throw up names and the manager chooses from that list. That would be my assessment of it. So yes, the manager does choose the players, but only the ones he is offered.
Bang on. It scares me how many people on here think he can choose to sign whoever he wants yet has a squad full of kids with little championship experience
As I recall at the Old No7 meeting Patrick intimated that people were suggesting that James picked the team - the starting XI - hence his ‘monstrous lie’ comment. If I remember correctly the issue of scouting and James’ input level into any list of players presented to the manager was not addressed. I was not aware then or since that anyone had suggested James picked the matchday team which would be a presposterous situation imho.
