Ireland fans would be very relieved to know that the days of hoofing it up to the big man were finally behind them.

I don’t know why cos he did ok with them in Japan .
He got them to I think it was the quarters and if Keane had gone their with his head down to play football instead of being a dick may have gone further imo

I don’t know why either but I made a business call to the Dublin area and had a great chat about football with this guy until I mentioned Barnsley, birthplace of Mick Mc. The bloke virtually hung up on me. I’m told the Irish dislike of MM had been reported also in one of the broadsheets though I didn’t read it. Could it have something to do with the Keane disagreement?

The Keane incident divided their fans. I remember a phone in on the radio about a year ago on the subject and the split of support between the two was approximately 50/50. Certainly not scientific but gave an insight into how it was viewed by some of the ROI supporters.

Mick was an unknown quantity in Ireland. Keane tried to usurp him, but proved he was an utter lovely person & traitor to his country. Personal interest. The ballad of Osborne & Cameron.

Too right. I always thought Keane was (and still is) an egotistical bully who thinks he's bigger than the team. No way was Mick going to let Keane rule the dressing room and rightly so.

Saw him handed his backside outside a Nottingham night club once cos he was acting the big I am being aggressive towards a young girl.
Heard later Cloughie took him to the Newsagents where she worked and made him apologise.

Spent an afternoon watching the republic just after the Keane incident in a bar in Turkey with about 100 of their supporters. To a man they all thought Mick was God, and they all decided as I knew him I deserved a drink...I left as a very drunk Barnsley fan:)

Word is here that he's been offered the job. From what I've come across there's no animosity to him over here. He's got a heck of a job on his hands though, they're crap. Might get Conor some extra game time though. After four games without scoring they certainly need all the goal threat they can get on the pitch.

Perhaps my initial statement was a bit strong. The English media made him out to be as popular as Jack Charlton for instance when my information suggests he wasn’t. That’s not to say he was disliked by all.
