It was very moving. My lad's a football mad 11 year old which helps you see the innocence of poor little Rhys Jones. Folk slate Barnsley and call it rough. Yes, we have dodgy accents, but it makes you feel safe that we don't have the gang cultures associated with the big cities.

It was a top top programme, all involved can be very proud of the way they told the story.

I hope those scumbags rot in prison for eternity.

If that was a true reflection of how they behaved in court I would have disowned them.

Absolutely disgusting, "all this for some f****ing kid" I hope they have had some serious boot and continue to do so inside and out.

It was very hard watching at times for anyone who has a child.

Horrible story but cracking acting. The lads who play the scumbags deserve a mention as their performances nearly had me kicking the tele through.

Agreed. As does Faye Mckeever who was brilliant just like she was in Moorside and has been for years in the terrific Sky 1 supermarket comedy Trollied.

Brilliantly acted - Love Stephen Graham- very talented. Go past that pub every week - all boarded up now- very eerie indeed.

We managed to raise nearly 300 for Rhys' s charity selling DVD 's of our Christmas production. Really affected the kids in our school.

Similar culture in Glasgow, and probably most places similar. Still, they all got what they deserved in the end.

Theres always been gangs in barnsley. Most of us growing up have been in scraps wi lads from next village but theres a significant difference between this aspect and the gang cultures in the bigger city.
    Drugs.
    Money.
    Culture.

You dont even have to look as far away as liverpool or london.
Parts of sheffield are quite dangerous.

True. Big difference in Sheffield is that most of the really ropey areas are well away from the city centre and quite self contained - Pitsmoor, Norfolk Park, Firth Park and the like. I lived in Sheffield for years, and never felt anything other than totally safe wandering round the city at all hours. Compare that with Nottingham where I also lived, which has The Meadows and St Anne's literally on the doorstep of the city centre, which when I was there were both very openly full of operational crack dens and brothels. Nottingham in my opinion has a really nasty undercurrent running through the whole city which is very difficult to put your finger on, but I was always looking over my shoulder. Even in posh Mapperley where I lived, I always felt quite wary.

I lived in Nottingham and worked in the pits around 84/85 and always thought it felt safe. Mind you, I was always at work.

Follow up programme tonight re- " Little Boy Blue What happened next." Its on at either 9pm or 10 pm on Channel 5
I think. Agree with comments in earlier posts. Very gripping programme, very well acted by all concerned.
If the family could watch it back it must have been harrowing for them.
Glad that Mr and Mrs Jones got back together. Grief does terrible things to folk.

I was in Pitsmoor in the 60's. Close to the heart of the steel manufacturing area it had been a desirable place to live with many fine well designed properties. I recall a massive influx of West Indian and Chinese and in much later times it became a popular
area for Asians. I went to visit a mate who had heart problems in the Northern General in Abbeydale.
Called in the Post Office and was shocked to see massive grills and padlocks all over the place. The postmaster got caught short and not having a toilet on site had to go next door. There were loads of people queueing for benefits. He asked us all to step back out on the pavement whilst he went for a gypsies kiss. Swear to God it took him ages to fasten all the chains and padlocks on the door and take them all off when he got back. Absolutely amazing.
Lad I used to work with lived round there and told me the crime rate especially with drugs had soared especially and there was a killing involving guns not so long ago. Such a shame as it used to be a fairly safe area years ago.

You want to have a walk around the wicker or abbeydale road...

    Interesting to say the least.

The Wicker seems to have cleaned itself up a lot since I lived there. Awesome Indian food round there. I take your point if you wander a few hundred yards earlier and find yourself in Spital Hill. Every time I parked up round there I was always thankful I drove such a **** car.
