...if it’s clear the season is over half way through, it’s customary to almost deliberately tank the rest. It’s called ‘shutting it down’. The motivations are slightly different (in NFL it’s getting a higher draft pick, in baseball just saving money) but it basically means cutting your losses and writing off the season I think these guys will shut it down in January. I’m not sure how we’ll tell the difference on the pitch, mind.
