Players taking on players. I miss 4-4-2 I miss having a target man. Football is a simple game. We seem to make it far more complicated than it needs to be.
Amen. But the only bloke who could have played on the right wing now plays for Stoke, and I don't think we've got anyone who can play left winger apart from Thomas or Simoes.
I'd stick Styles out there. He's wasted in the middle, all his runs end up in a wall of opposition shirts.
Worked well for Brian Clough, and for Norman Hunter with us. I quite like the current formation with wing backs, but we are lacking any sort of real threat in the middle. Woodrow is a quality player, but I just don't think he fits this style of play. Stick him alongside a back to goal type front man, I think he'd find his form again. He does well in the build up play & closing down, but he's lost and too deep in this system.
The problem with wing backs is that to be successful, the players need to have the attributes of both a fullback and a winger. We're using bog-standard fullbacks as wingers and so we never get the crosses in or get around the opposition defenders in any threatening way whatsoever. I agree with the OP. Bring back wingers!
I think Ludewig is a proper win back. He attacks as much as he defends & can take on a man. Odour would be my choice on the other side, although Jordan Williams has had a good start to the season.
Ludo was poor today, so I might be being harsh on him. Odour is a good shout, but I'd go with Odour on the left and Jordan Williams on the right.
It's good Jordan & Clarke can play on both sides, especially as Ben Williams is out. Ludewig is hard as nails, which helps at times. I think of that tackle that took him out last season. He just dusted himself off & got on with it. If he'd been a Reading player a stretcher would have been called for after that.
I miss attacking. The ultra defensiveness is so dull. At least back in the old days even Machin let Brendan attack occasionally
