Some of the treatment he is getting on social media makes me question football fans. I’m not a fan of his in particular, but I think he’s always done a decent job for England. He’s going through a very bad patch of form. He’ll be more aware than anyone. It’s worse than the treatment John Stones got. Why do football fans and pundits feel the need to pull someone down so far? Where does it stop? When they get dropped? When they hang up their boots? When they have a mental breakdown? Yes footballers are well paid, and accountable but some of the stuff I’ve read is beyond bullying.
It could be worse he could be Devante Cole, bet he is dreading today, probably booed coming on,if they dare pick him
Don't go on any other social media so haven't seen it. I think some of the stuff about Cole on here is a bit much though. I have no problem with critical analysis of players and I don't rate Cole very much myself. And last week I called Kitching a tin of peas so I'm not entirely innocent here. But it seemed to get beyond criticism at times this week and a bit nasty. But then who am I to judge what's acceptable and what isn't.
I don't understand why anyone with any kind of public profile would want to use social media and subject themselves to what they find on there.
We have already booed victor when coming on and going off this season very embarrassing. Especially with victor not the most talented but cant question his effort.
I expect Gareth Southgate to keep faith with him and pick him for the World Cup, which would give him the opportunity to get his game back together much like what happened with John Stones at the last one.
Yer know what, I think it was Sir Alex Ferguson(early years at Man U) who was concerned about the press he was getting form the daily papers & I think it was Sir Matt Busby who said, the best advise I can give you is, don't read them.
Thing with Maguire is he was happy (obviously) to ride the wave of plaudits when he wasn’t actually that good. Rough with the smooth some might say, but I’ve mentioned on here a few times that he was never England’s best defender despite the fact that he ‘drank the vodka and the jaegar’ and beat his chest really really hard. John Stones got a far worse a deal in this sense when you consider his form.
Seems a nice lad from what I’ve seen/heard. Still the idiots probably don’t earn in a year what he gets a week so last laugh and all that
In my own Barnsley orientated opinion, I've always felt that Stones was the better of the two. I have always thought Maguire has nothing like the skill level/ perception level that Stones has. That said, Maguire did really well at Leicester and has looked decent in an England team (often performing against crap opposition). The way Stones became the player the English public wanted to hate was just out of order. His form was never as bad as Maguire 's appears now. However, the level of hate, undermining, analysis to prove how sh#t he is, bullying etc on social media has gone off the scale by comparison as far as Maguire is concerned. Some of the stuff I'm reading is way beyond football. To me it starts with the pundits trying to make themselves relevant on MOTD etc. It then just intensifies. Everyone is entitled to have a grumble about poor performance - but this is a hate campaign and it's not nice to see. The way Stones was treated was bad, this is worse imo. Why as a nation do we need to do this to our players?
Social media is a major problem. If I were a player I'd come off it altogether. Interesting point on pundits. Today is the first time Keane has basically said go easy on Maguire, he's made an honest mistake etc. Makes you wonder if he's had a rethink as he is usually one of Maguire's biggest critics.
Could't resist having a back handed pop at Ronaldo though - words to the effect that he offers nothing but scores. Keane was the one who started the anti Stones stuff as well. I can't stand him tbh.
There wasn’t one single person who started the anti-Stones rhetoric. He got it from all angles and on all platforms/channels. I would say it’s as bad as what Maguire is getting now, and on the BBC in particular from Shearer, Keown and Wright it was way, way over the top. Keane’s point on Ronaldo was more about when he doesn’t score there’s little else to his game that’s worth a starting place. Fair comment if you ask me.
Would disagree based on how awful Manchester United have been this season, and especially Ronaldo within that at times.
Unfortunately comes with the territory of been at the biggest supported club in the country. Phil Jones has had it for years, Shaw used to get it, Fred gets it, Rashford gets it. It’s wrong but it isn’t going to change. This place was full of abuse earlier in the season. Some of the stuff aimed at Schopp & some players who were giving their all but aren’t up to the standard was out of order.
