What would he be worth at today's prices? Consider that Palace are paying £27 million for Benteke.

Also how long would we have managed to keep hold of him (in today's mad world)?

More to the point, how soon would he have been hounded out by those fans who took a dislike to him. He looked a bit over weight if I remember rightly, and his early games were not that good, but it didn't take him long to get up to "English speed". The rest, as they say, is history......

Probably the greatest player to pull on a Barnsley shirt in modern times (ie from the 60s onwards, if that makes sense :))

Trying to think of a comparable player in the modern game to base a price on. And no one springs to mind tbh. Ronnie would be at a top Premier League or European side without doubt. Who wouldn't want a goalscoring midfielder like him? My first hero in red, and the best I've ever seen at Oakwell.

Yes he was. Shocking. The number of times you would see him slalom through an entire defence, take it round the keeper and then just fluke it into the net.
    No style AT ALL!

In today's world of football I don't think we'd have stood any chance of signing Ronnie. What a player he was, absolute top quality who would be worth millions if he was playing now.

Yep, true that. Scottish international, highly regarded, transferred from one of the old firm teams, to a mid table Third Division side. As you say, little chance of anything similar happening now.

Agree 100% fantastic player, faster over 20 yards than Usain Bolt if there was a chance of a goal at the end of it.

I still don't understand why he signed for us.

There must have been quite a few first division teams who would have taken him.

The other odd thing was that there never seemed to be any transfer rumours about him until he actually left to go to Portugal.

LJ said he didn't turn his head enough, Hemsy said he was too old.

I recall a story that Leeds had offered £400K for him. I guess it's no coincidence that for a brief time we were not a selling club, and those who were around then look on it as the club's halcyon period.

Re: I still don't understand why he signed for us.

Google Ronnie Glavin Fire and you'll find why a lot of clubs wouldn't have touched him with a bargepole at the time. Their loss, our gain. We got him for £40,000 or £50,000 (reports differ) which was half what Celtic paid Partick for him just 4 years earlier, four years in which he won just about everything with Celtic and played in their midfield alongside Dalglish. He was top scorer with 19 goals for them just 2 years before we signed him at a snip.
