Might have been better PR if the police hadn’t shot dead another black lass just before the verdict was announced!

How can he be allowed to ‘admit guilt’ after trial?
He was tried because he pleaded not guilty, surely you can’t wait until after the trial and then admit guilt to lower your sentence? That makes no sense whatsoever.

It didn't take that long tbf.

I've been watching most of the trial on court TV.

It's been said that it's unusually quick for the trial start date from the incident.

It was all done and dusted in 3 weeks, and the jury took just 1 day.

I think it's been a quicker turnaround as could ever been expected. They did say that the judge and lawyers have also gone above and beyond to put the cases together.

Although judge said it will be 8 weeks before he is sentenced. Which is the bit I find quite long

It’s probably because they think it’ll take six or seven weeks to get all the windows boarded up!

I'm not sure if he pleaded the 5th what the situation is. I assume he may be able to show remorse / apology, but I'm not sure.

But we all know he would have got off with it if not for the video footage.

Not sure how you can claim a career criminal as "a great man"?

The actions of the police were utterly wrong and I'm glad justice has been served, but let's not kid ourselves that George Floyd was a stand up guy.

Or you could compare her to Kyle Rittenhall, who shot and killed 2 people, and was not only arrested alive (whilst armed with a semi automatic) but serving police officers donated to his defence costs.

I’m sure race played no part in that

This wasn’t just a victory for George Floyds family , This was a victory for all people in US stopped by police which usually means fear for their lives especially in the Black Community .
Many don’t have criminal convictions or have been in trouble with the law .
MNany just stopped because of the Calibre of car they are driving or other non criminal reasons they are pulled over or stopped in the street .
The bloke had handed over an alleged fake currency note and ended up losing his life . No gun no knife and already cuffed .
How many have probably had a fake note and not known?
This victory is a start and hopefully a warning that police actions have consequences and will no longer be brushed under the carpet .
If a fatality at the hands of police is justified it will show up in future not just dismissed and if justified or not .
The USpolice have a dangerous job no doubt about that but these criminals as Chauvin need weeding out and as much as possible refused entry into the force .
I think they have taken a small step in that direction but have a very long road ahead .

Talking of statements that miss the mark to an incredible degree. Step forward Nancy Pelosi.

"Thank you George Floyd for sacrificing your life for justice... Because of you and because of thousands, millions of people around the world who came out for justice, your name will always be synonymous with justice"

That is mental, how did he sacrifice his life for justice? I pretty sure he had zero intentions of allowing himself to be killed in order to progress race relations.

I guess you are asking If he does admit guilt can he be charged with perjury or attempting to pervert the cause of justice.

I think in many cases that would be a valid argument but not in this one

There is no doubt he was responsible for Floyds death. The question the jury had to decide was whether his conduct constituted 2nd degree Murder. He can accept the verdict and take responsibility but it doesn’t mean he should have pleaded guilty to the charge.

He also never stood up in court and told porkies either

Don’t misunderstand me I think he is an evil man and deserves a long prison sentence but all this talk of 40 or 70 years is unhelpful and will lead to an outcry when he gets something like 10-15 years.

Even IF use of a firearm they shot her FOUR times, tell me that's not being gun happy!
Notwithstanding that its a highly sensitive situation in the states and they must have known it would inflame the situation.
Now I have no sympathy for anybody who goes after somebody else with a knife, but seriously they needed to shoot a 16 year old lass four times to stop her attempting to stab somebody? Give over?

Even if this is true, does this mean she deserved to be murdered? Does this mean that the police should be able to act as judge, jury and executioner?

If your answer to that is no, it isn't even worth mentioning what went on is it? If she's holding a gun up I can maybe understand the argument that they had to take action, but she wasn't. I find it very hard to believe that she was "just about to stick the knife in".

As it happens there are conflicting stories going around anyway. One being like you describe it and the other that she was the one being attacked, she was then defending herself while standing at her home, where she was the one that called the police.

I don't know which is true and neither do you (as it happens I think the truth is probably somewhere in the middle). But EITHER WAY. She did not deserve to be murdered. In civilised societies police are trained to de-escalate situations rather than being trigger happy. Unfortunately the US is still decades behind a civilised society in that regard. Undertrained and overzealous police (and yes, there is a not insignificant proportion who are racist thugs) who are taught to treat every situation as though there is an insurmountable threat that they have to deal with. Treat everybody as though they're hiding a gun and are about to kill everybody.

The problem with being a policeman in the US is very different to most European countries due to the prevalence of arms It makes them a lot more jumpy when you have to assume every felon is almost certainly armed and so quite likely to shoot given a chance - its the main reason they are quite twitchy on the trigger. I dont see a solution whilst American gun culture is unchanged - yes some police are undertrained and overzealous and in some cases racist but they have to treat everyone as though they are holding a gun and about to kill someone as its often true

    No, I’ll be clearer.
It’s simply that the principal as I understand it in England is that if I plead guilty I can expect a reduced sentence compared to pleading not guilty and going to trial.

Coughing after the trial, as I understand it, wouldn’t enamour me to the judge here, and I can’t understand how that principle would be different elsewhere.
