Just because some teams do it doesn't mean it's the only way to play football. We beat QPR and Derby without one, I think we're fine. It's crazy to slate the manager because we lost to the current best team in the division after 2 cracking victories.

    We've been out done.

    QPR controlled the second half
    Ipswich controlled the second half
    Huddersfield controlled large amounts yesterday.
Northampton Controlled the second half and onwards.

Yesterday, We couldn't get close at times. Their number 9, 10 and some one deep in midfield. Couldn't get close. Not sure if you made the trip to Ipswich put it was the same in the second half.

Teams will realise and work us out quickly. Be patient in the centre of midfield and get players on the half turn between defence and midfield and midfield and defence and we can't get close.

You do realise we have a relatively new manager, new players have just moved up a league and already have 6 points in the bank having played all long established Championship teams?

How many of them are from the wrong side ? I'd imagine majority.
Also a good defensive minded midfield doesn't need to make many tackles at all. You make a tackle when you're out of position.

    Hahahahaha

    "we need a ball winner"

*stat showing Hourihane has made the most tackles in the league*

"b-b-but what side are those tackles from? A good defensive midfielder doesn't make tackles"

Give it up. You said we need a ball winner. Conor Hourihane is the most prolific tackler in the league. Fact. In addition to having scored 2 and assisted at least 3.

Good to see that the reason I stopped posting on here (due to the fact the morons were making me lose my mind) is still going strong.

He's actually having a pop at Conor Hourihane. The bloke that's had a hand in about 80% of our goals for over 2 years and has stepped up, taken the armband, picked us up by the bootlaces and dragged us forward after a dismal first half of last season, and since arriving in the championship has scored goals, set up goals, and WON the most tackles in the league. Who gives a flipping stuff which side he's won them from as long as he's won them?

Eyes painted on and brain not inserted inside skull.

Let's remember that you don't know what a tackle is though

10th best interceptions per game in the league, 4th best amongst midfielders.

    Keep digging lad.

But they're from the wrong side ffs. Why don't you ******* learn to read? OK he's making the most tackles and is in the top four midfielder in the league for interceptions but they're from the wrong side

I didn't know there was a right or wrong side to tackle from but I'm not the oracle

Before I get accused of "bullying", "belittling" or any of the other ludicrous statements some people have been making about anyone that disagrees with you, can I just state; you're entitled to your opinion, just like anyone else. You shouldn't be berated for it, no matter how daft it is to the majority of people. In the same way I hope people can respect my opinion.

Conor Hourihane is one of the best midfielders in the division.

You get particularly aggressive, obtrusive and childish when someone points out that just maybe you don't have all the answers. If you did why aren't you coaching Arsenal. In fact what form of coaching do you undertake? Surely someone somewhere can benefit from your incredible insights.

My opinion. Don't give a **** if anyone has a problem with that.

    Weird thread this

We've got a couple of the best midfielders we've had in years playing for us who cost peanuts to buy from lower league clubs who've dragged us into the top half of the championship , but hey let's pull them down and look for replacements.

Can I just say to you that I haven't said Hourihane isn't a good player. I've questions if HE and SCOWEN can play together. If Hourihane played with a good defensive minded player then it's not a big problem. Espcially if he's got a screen upfront with Winnall that will come deep.

Hourihane is good at the defensive side of things

Don't know when you started watching Barnsley HT, but I've had the pleasure of watching them since 1980, seeing Ian Evans, Paul Futcher, Arjan de Zeeuw, and currently Alfie Mawson, all centre halves who were also elegant footballers who could go through 90 minutes without getting dirt on their shorts, Futcher especially. These players have always been around, relative to the level they played at. But all of the sides they played in had a different in style but equally valuable central colleague - McCarthy, May, Smith, Tiler, Davis, and a "ball winner" in midfield - McHale/Banks, Gwyn Thomas, Darren Sheridan. They also had a mix of good target men, good box-to box-to midfielders, good goalkeepers, good goalscoring strikers etc etc, and only very rarely did we get a full side of them together, possibly in 80-82, 96-97 and 99-00. We've rarely had the resource to acquire a full squad of top drawer quality and we've had them, they often moved on.

Maldini was class, one of the best of his type, as was Baresi but, both at club and international level, they were in wonderful teams, and the Italians were never shy of "putting their foot in" when they needed to. Arsenal at their peak had Vieira in the middle, elegant but tough (and downright dirty at times) and a few defenders who were very limited in terms of footballing ability but knew how to defend/tackle/win the ball.

In my opinion, I reckon I've seen enough football to accept that the successful teams I've seen collectively depended on the mix of the players in it, the mix of their attributes and more than a share of luck.
