I think as an entire population of the planet we have zero idea on the best way to go with this...

Take Tokyo for example, they didn't go for a lockdown approach for a second wave, however, it seems mid August, their cases peaked same with deaths and now are reducing. Are we seeing here that the only real way will be herd immunity? It has to now be seriously considered as a possible new approach. Throw all protection towards the most vulnerable groups through unfortunately a strict isolation and the rest of the population get on with life as normal as possible. Admittedly it could possibly be the worst decision ever made, but it could also be the only way out of this. What are we actually achieving by having a lockdown or these restrictions. I'm leaning to the thinking that we are just delaying things a few months hoping a magical cure becomes available. As soon as we end the current measures, as things stand, the numbers will go back up surely? So what will the response? Lets do another mini lockdown. In the meantime the country is knees financially no government of any party having any money to support people, mass unemployment....

So do we now throw a ton of resources as I say at protecting the vulnerable whilst we do reach a level of herd immunity that this virus finds it impossible to spread?

I think we keep a close eye on Tokyo. It could be the answer. I'm glad it's not my decision to make, but I think in the next few weeks it needs to be considered especially if deaths and cases keep falling in Tokyo as the model for it.

Also. I'm a bit of a believer that the answer is always somewhere in nature and I've been reading about a seaweed extract called iota-carrageenan, which is commonly used as a thickening agent in food products. This is safe for humans and in trials is showing to successfully inhibit SARS-CoV-2. Also, the same effect seemingly occurs from a low concentration of a hardwood extract called xylitol, which is commonly used as a sugar substitute. These have been combined to so far generate even better results.. Yes early days for this but both of these are safe for human consumption. Just think maybe a nasal spray and a chewing gum for instance with these ingredients. I know which I would prefer to try first, something like this or a vaccine with allsorts of nasties brewed up in it.

I'd rather have a properly tested vaccine than some hocus pocus cure.

What is this hocus pocus cure you mention though? Surely not the possible things I suggested. No hocus pocus there. They are naturally occurring substances..currently in serious medical trials. No different to trials on the toxic poisons being put into vaccines, especially when we hear that these vaccines may only last a few months. Don't think I am ready to start having an injection every 3 months flooding the bloodstream with increased doses of formaldehyde, thimerosal and mercury.

Dont think I'd fancy taking the vaccine rather take my chances, I remember at the beginning of the year seeing people in china getting treated by doctors head to toe in ppe looking more like astronoughts then the whole of Britain locked down told to only leave home for essential reasons, a few months later and no 50p masks will save us all and more people are dying of flu each month.

You do know mercury and formaldehyde are naturally occurring substances right?

Dihydrogen monoxide is colourless, odourless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

    Dihydrogen monoxide:
    • is also known as hydroxl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
    • contributes to the “greenhouse effect.”
    • may cause severe burns.
    • contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
    • accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
    • may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of car brakes.
    • has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.
    Contamination is reaching epidemic proportions!

Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in the UK today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of pounds of property damage.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
    • as an industrial solvent and coolant.
    • in nuclear power plants.
    • in the production of styrofoam.
    • as a fire retardant.
    • in many forms of cruel animal research.
    • in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
    • as an additive in certain “junk-foods” and other food products.

    Ban it now!! ;)

Of course and in one small annual flu jab, no evidence of harm. However, talk of a vaccine only being effective for 3 months, so you end up with 4x the yearly dose.. Who knows.

But still misses the point. Don't forget non-toxic naturally occurring substances as well.

Main point of thread though was the herd immunity bit? Should it now seriously be considered as a strategy and focus protection on those most vulnerable? It's just an option or do we keep locking down and moving the problem a few weeks down the road whilst having no money in the public purse to help anyone? It was just the suprising numbers coming out of Tokyo where they have possible reached that point of herd immunity. Defo worth watching how it plays out over there in the next month or so.

Seems to me the entire response to the virus has been based on mathematical models. We are going to have to learn to live with this Virus like have every other. Some form of herd immunity seems inevitable.

Boris thinks he can save Christmas with one of his three possible plans..

    1) 3.2 million tests a day by November. Apparently according to The Times his idea is more advanced than expected.

    2) Vaccine by December. Very few would get it straight away but care home residents and staff would be first on the list.

    3) Two week lockdown two weeks before Christmas so by Christmas day we can mingle with family safely if the previous two weeks are taken seriously enough by the population.

We don't need a rushed vaccine or another lockdown so I hope it's option one. That's enough tests for everyone to get one every three weeks which should keep cases down and bring normality back.
