I was wondering about that actually. Although it's arguable that Sunderland and Newcastle is a single conurbation.

Technically, so are Leeds & Bradford (and nearer Sheffield-Rotherham)

Guisely AFC and Farsely Celtic both pre-date Leeds Utd - although Leeds City was older than both but was forced to disband after illegal payments to players and "became" Leeds Utd.

Yeah there isn't much green between Sheffield and Rotherham. The divide is the M1.

Not sure too many Geordies and Wearsiders would agree with you there but also as Scoff points out if you claim Newcasle and Sunderland and have two teams between them you have to consider Leeds and Bradford as one as well so has tow teams

Never checked but was Football played in Northern towns and cities before Southern ones or did the game evolve at the same time across the country.

Yep, the current incarnation of Leeds United is a relatively "young" team in comparison with many professional sides. I agree that there's not much greenery between Leeds and Bradford, though there is some. Bradford and Halifax also seem to morph into one city for that matter, as do Sheffield and Rotherham.

Wakefield is a rugby league heartland, so I think that explains that one really. Leeds nearby too so most people round here support that lot.

Strange place Wakefield. If you go in the city centre pubs they have music on rather than sports. Unless it's a big match. The staff look at you daft if you ask for Cricket or Horse Racing putting on.

If you ever go in the Grey Horse there's a mannequin sat at one of the tables.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_association_football

Sheffield rules (based on earlier Cambridge rules) and Sheffield FC in 1857. Notts County in 1862, Stoke in 1863 (oldest league team) and first tournament was in Sheffield in 1868 (Youdan Cup).

So many of the founding steps were relatively local. Reading in 1871 and Swindon, Ipswich and Watford as the game went south. Fulham (first London club still in the league) in 1879, QPR and Spurs were in 1882
