We always park near coral island arcade - near the castle and flagship. There's also a multi-story car park there as well.

Are you just going for the day? I find the best car park to be two minutes away from central pier. It's a small one on a back street but always seems to have a space compared to the large ones. Straight across from the pier on the opposite side of the road on the corner by Tussades is Jax amusements that's got a prize bingo and on the very corner a small cafe. Take first right down the side of a chippy restaurant down the back street past a William Hill, turn first left and it's straight forward (you see a mini indoor market on the right and Cosy Cafe on the left).

Head right to the north end, by the big tableaux. Free street parking on the side roads off the prom. Get out and walk up & down to see the tableaux, then get back in the car and drive along the prom to see the rest. You'll be crawling along, but kids will get a good view and then you're at the right end of the prom to get home - straight out past what was the airport.

I usually park for free on the back streets off the south end - behind the Solaris centre if you can get there early enough then walk up and down. Although it depends how old the kids are as its a long trek to the centre of town. Maybe walk up and take the tram back down to the south end and enjoy the lights that way rather than spend hours getting frustrated at the traffic (I've never managed to drive more than about half a mile before giving it up as a bad job).
