Indulge me, I’ll tell you a story.

Picture if you will, a large, round, bespectacled fellow, not far off 40, let’s call him ‘Troff’, walking back up Pontefract Road with his son after the game today.

Now Troff was lamenting the game, and season as a whole, and the teenage Troff junior agreed that he was somewhat baffled as to the tactics of Mr Asbaghi and furthermore agreed he didn’t have any idea what exactly he was trying to achieve.

Luckily for these two clearly deluded fools, a more learned supporter was walking directly behind them. This footballing Svengali proceeded to educate the two rotund Doncastrians, and the others also walking away from the ground in the general vacinity, as to the errors of their thinking. The problems suffered by Barnsley FC this season are not the result of a negligent summer; nor the disastrous appointments of two inept head coaches.

Nor is the league position in which we find ourselves the result of an underprepared squad, containing little to no experience in key areas and with players who have been woefully out of form, with no leadership. It isn’t even to do with the circus going on behind the scenes between the various factions of the ownership group.

No no. Barnsley are bottom of the championship due solely to, wait for it, bad luck.

This fact was proven beyond dispute by the said wise fellow illustrating examples; today when Quina hit the bar, the late equalisers we conceded in recent weeks (all bad luck and nothing to do with any other influence), and other occasions when we’d gone close to scoring but didn’t, only to then concede. All misfortune. Had the cards aligned more evenly, we’d have won a lot more games and been safe.

Here’s the twist. That all actually happened. I drove home in silence not quite able to compute that someone who’d watched the season we’ve had genuinely thinks they’ve just been a bit unlucky.

Now, I’ve no issue with rose tinted spectacles - and all clubs have happy clappers - but this particular guy took the biscuit. Absolutely unbelievable.

Phew! That makes perfect sense. Almost as much as it's all the fault of the fans, apart from a select few!

I’m rarely lost for words but I had little to respond to him with. I just couldn’t see any of what his point was.

@troff you should have referenced the league table based on xg, this would have left the footballing Svengali speechless. Although in all honesty you probably didn’t have this at your finger tips.

In terms of luck our actual points are around 10 higher than what our xg points would have been. Whisper this quietly, but over the season we’ve been relatively lucky!

I like what you did there. By placing the two words Kylie and sucks almost juxtapose made me read your post twice.
