Why do all clothing shops insist on asking for 'an email address to send your backup receipt to'. (Well, I know why, it's to spam me with emails about their shop). It used to slightly bug me when it was just one or two but now it's really winding me up as they've all jumped on the bandwagon. I don't need a 'backup receipt', they've just put a paper receipt that I'm going to throw away in two seconds in my bag, I certainly don't need a second one sending to me too. The shop assistants all look really confused when I tell them I don't want one. Anyone else noticed this or is it just female shops?

I give them the email address of someone I interviewed for benefit fraud years ago. Suzybigtits69@gmail.com. True story.

It's not only so they can email you. They can also upload your details into Facebook, Google etc and target ads specifically at you on the platforms they control advertising on assuming they can match you with an account on that platform (facebook, Instagram, youtube, bing etc). The really savvy companies will look for trends in their purchase histories and put specific offers in front of you based on what you have just bought. They can even augment the data from data science companies to target customers who meet certain socio or economic criteria. Obviously, this stuff happens more frequently when you buy from companies online (or simply visit a companies site that has a retargeting pixel).

I usually tell them I don't have an email address.

I feel sort of ambivalent about this since it's definitely sinister but if I'm going to see ads it might as well be for stuff tailored specifically towards me and deals I'd go for

I considered that but I prefer to just tell them I don't want to give them it, it's truthful and shows that not everyone wants to do so.

I don't feel the need to be truthful when being misled about a "backup receipt" ;)
