    Still remember the school song 50+ years since I left.

    Pray what is the meaning of that?
    Ever be bold, that gate we'll hold,
    There's the translation pat
    That Holgate with "d' we used to spell,
    Archbishop is clearly seen
    Fortiter Occupa Portum,
    Pray what us the gate you mean
    Etc.

    Excellent! We sang it only on Speech Day, so you have remembered that very well. Holgate was Archbishop of York in the 16th century, and he founded Barnsley Grammar School, Archbishop Holgate Grammar School in York, which is still in existence, though a comprehensive now, plus at least one other school. It's a great shame that a school which was founded so long ago as Barnsley Grammar School no longer exists.
