Championship Playoff Restructure

Proposal been submitted for extending the format.
Under new proposals it would see 2 additional teams qualify for the playoffs.
Tie 1 5th v 8th
Tie 2 6th v 7th

Winner of Tie 1 plays 3rd
Winner of Tie 2 plays 4th

3rd & 4th would be at home

Winners of those play final

 

Similar to National league then.

Not sure about it myself, it's been an accepted and decent format as it is.

I can only see it encouraging more sides to spend more than they should in hope of reaching the greed league

 

Not needed in my opinion.
Of course this doesn’t mean it won’t happen.

 

Can’t see how it wouldn’t get voted for as it increases the chance for all teams to get into the play offs

 

They should expand it to 24 teams and have them play each other home and away with the top 2 going up.

 

Yeah, they could call it league or something, It'd be like the best teams go up and the worst get relegated. Revolutionary!

I like the current format but I like the sound of that too. It gives an advantage to the higher placed teams and keeps the season open for longer for more teams. But best of all it provides the opportunity for Leeds or Sheff Utd to finish 3rd, missing out on automatic on goal difference, only to lose in the final to the team that finished 7th, 30 points behind them. Their perceived injustice will have us laughing all summer.

 

Rather leave it as it is, it’s worked for over 30 years. If this comes in for the Championship then no doubt it’ll follow in L1 and L2. Change for the sake of it.

 

They should keep it as it is. The national league system is terrible. It’s supposed to favour the teams who finish higher up but they don’t play for weeks while they wait for the other games to be concluded & aren’t anywhere near their best when the game comes round.

 

Won't make any cash from TV as you've currently got 2 x 2 legged semi final plus final = 5 games, new format is 4 x one off games plus final.
My worry with it is you could potentially see the 3rd and 4th team very secure in the playoff spots earlier than present so could start resting players 4/5 games before the end of the season if they've no chance of Auto's, Sunderland scenario last season secure in the playoffs rested players lost last 5 league games, came into the playoff fresher and recharged.

 

I think they should expand the Premier League and relegate more teams. Spread the money around by giving extra teams the opportunity of the greed league money that isn't filtering down the pyramid naturally.

 

It would make sky and EFL more money I would have thought? That’s why it will have been tabled.

 

Would have thought it would be a club who proposed it to be honest they are the big potential winners in this.
If you’re a club in top 10/12 but realistically know with the PL clubs coming down you are gonna struggle to break into the top 6 it gives you a much better chance of making the play offs and equally the PL over a season.

edit: just checked and it was Peter Risdale who proposed it.

 

It's been proposed by Peter Ridsdale at Preston not the broadcaster.
Current system is 5 games on TV new proposed format is still 5 games so would fit into existing broadcast deal which runs until 2029

If PR has proposed it, it should be rejected just on that basis alone.

 

I actually think they will re format the system at some point and have PL and PL2

12 teams in PL
20 teams in PL 2
EFL 1 20 teams
EFL 2 20 teams
EFL 3 20 teams

Only playing 22 PL games per club will allow the greedy 6 to participate in a European Super League.

 

I'd agree with that format if it still had promotion and relegation.

 

I would imagine money is at the root of the motivation mate
