Made curious by my post in the Jon Russell thread about him potentially playing at the World Cup next summer, I've been spurred to do some research tonight. I've looked at the squad lists for all the tournaments since 1998 and there were no serving Barnsley players involved (albeit some former ones - Fallon, Mulligan, Bertos, Christie for NZ and of course Stones). So does anyone know if it's ever happened?
We got close, as Eric Tinkler is in the 2002 Panini World Cup sticker book, with Barnsley down as his team. Unfortunately, by the time of the World Cup he was no longer with us. And he didn’t get selected anyway. But at least he’s in the book!
Yes, he's also in the 1998 Merlin World Cup sticker book! Hence I'd always thought he played in it until today.
I know it's not the World Cup proper, but didn't Callum Styles play in a World Cup qualifier for Hungary?
Looking ahead - with fingers crossed - 2026 World Cup - Bland and Yoganathan representing Cymru. Craig Bellamy we love you!
Darren Barnard played in World Cup Qualifiers whilst being on Barnsleys books in 2001. So it depends whether you count the qualifiers or just the final stages.
We've had plenty of players appear in qualifiers over the years. Taggart and Fleming must have played in loads while with us.
Fjortoft? no, his last cap was in 1996. Edit; our one season in the PL coincided with the run up to the world cup but I'm fairly sure that none of our best players featured in it.
