Today has at least showed some more positives again, on various subjects. But admittedly, we can't keep doing that to ourselves with appalling defending like that. And in fairness, there will be many better teams than Burton who will take even more advantage, of such bad defending and keeping.
Sign a proper no nonsense centre half and we could be in business this season but sadly my gut feeling is we’ll try to get by with what we’ve got.
If l was Connor l would be begging the board, a bit of investment in the defence could reap it's rewards this season. I'm not holding my breath though
A centre half with a bit of pace is a must but they don’t come cheap. Might end up being a loan. Whatever but it needs to be sooner rather than later.
We need a central defender and a central forward too. We can't rely on McGoldrick all season. And we were regularly pumping through balls for him to chase today - who came up with that as a tactic?
Said elsewhere but it's still valid, we are two proper central defenders and a decent back-up for McGoldrick from having a squad that might be able to compete over course and distance imho. Small sample size but McGoldrick, Cleary, Kelly and Vickers have all impressed. Vimal and Bland continue to progress and DKD, Phillips and Russell remain potent goal threats. But you can't simply be expected to score 3 and 4 goals every game to win (as in our only three home wins since January 4th). We need to be able to win 1-0 now and again! Let's hope the penny has finally dropped with Sormaz and Neerav and the next week or two will see the arrival of this season's Bobby Thomas or Lewis Brunt equivalent together with a more seasoned reliable L1 centre back.
I couldn't believe that either. He should be doing as little running for the ball as possible for us.
Ryan Edwards former Plymouth Blackpool and Dundee United centre half. Out of contract. Aged 31 6ft 5 tall no nonsense defender.
Another good result Wednesday and hopefully we can use the start of this season as abit of a bargaining chip when recruiting. Any players still sat on the fence so to speak.
I don't necessarily disagree with this call but to add some balance: Neither CH are Conor's preferred starting CHs (change both CHs in any team in this league and they might struggle) The first goal came from a forward giving away a penalty The second, well, yeah. Not great. Except playing with a high press is going to leave that vulnerability. It could be said that the midfield should have stopped the punt infield happening Burton barely had a sniff in the second half Once the team as a whole started playing the defence wasn't so exposed Saying all this, I don't know what happened to the "Rolls Royce" player Earl was for his first three matches in a red shirt.
You can if you don't ask them, or beat the **** out of them, every time they try to take a touch and play a pass. You could see MDG especially was nervous but I thought he competed pretty well with a tough number 9. Take him off throw ins too ffs.
Looking at our listed defenders on our squad list Watson MDG Roberts (injured) Shepherd Earl Ogbeta Gent (injured) Bland Lopata (not required) Would shipping out Lopata allow us to bring in a CB?
In all seriousness, why can't you ever have even the tiniest little bit of positivity about anything? They're our third and fourth choice centre backs, playing in a system neither will have played in for a couple of seasons and going up against a handful of a centre forward. Thought they defended pretty well - I don't think they were particularly great on the ball but didn't have huge options against a team who put them under real pressure. Just every now and again try to go from 'everything is ****' to 'it was ok'.
