Hey lets look back, in anger, by Oasis

Is there such a thing though, as being 'over played' ?.
I agree with the idea that it's a popular end of the night song, a bit of a lads thing...

 

I always skipped past on the album, but it came on the radio recently and I was struggling a bit with my mental health. It resonated with me, and I found it comforting.

Another song that’s overplayed is Town Called Malice. It’s the radios token Jam offering, but no where near their best work.

 

Everybody Hurts is an amazing vocal. I just always found it a bit trite, and there are better tracks on the album. Probably because it's one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Drive, Try Not to Breathe, Monty Got a Raw Deal are all stratospherically good.

Agree about Town Called Malice. Great song, but even as a casual Jam fan there are plenty of other tracks that float my boat a lot more. Down in the Tube Station at Midnight is probably my favourite, closely followed by Beat Surrender (if only for the outrageous key changes!)

 

Yep, great album Automatic, and speaking of REM, I bought Monster when it came out, but found it a hard listen - like it now!

Beat Surrender is a bit bitter sweet for me, as they were on the verge of calling it a day. I have the record, think it was an EP? Some of my favourite songs are on the Setting Sons album. I don’t think there’s a bad song on there.

 

Monster is one of the most misunderstood albums of all time in my opinion. Pretty much nobody "got" it when it was released, me included (and you by the sound of things!) But I think it's aged brilliantly. I can't say it's my favourite REM album, and personally I prefer New Adventures in Hi-Fi. But it was a massively daring change of direction, and it worked. And lyrically, it's both dark and fantastically astute.

 

One of my favourites, again from that time is
Just Who Is The 5 o'clock Hero, often derided as " not Jam enough" by fans. Brilliant track for me, with 2 others, War and The Great Depression on the b side, the latter could have been a single.
The Gift was another great album.

 

Rem were brilliant, favourite song bad day awesome song.

 

Yep, good songs, although War was only on certain editions if I remember correctly. Some great songs on The Gift. Planners dream, Precious, Carnation, Running on the spot, Ghosts - although listening to that album it’s easy to see that Weller was going in a different direction.

 

Does anyone get the Reytons? Just sound like a rip off of The Arctic Monkeys to me but people rave about them.

 

Was at the Oasis gig Wembley Sunday night with my lad.

Absolutely astounding. I’ve seen them multiple times from the late 90’s to 00’s; but I can honestly say that musically; well specifically vocally in Liam’s case, that this is the very best version of them live that I’ve seen. I didn’t see them in the early-mid nineties, was a bit young - though I can’t imagine they were better then than now.

Don’t look back in anger is a fantastic track that suffers due its popularity. It’s far from my favourite oasis track - but it doesn’t become poor just because it’s popular. You can argue the same re Wonderwall. Neither are anything like as good as, for example, The Masterplan, not even a single originally - but even that has gained popularity.

Plenty of songs by plenty of artists suffer the same fate. Summer of ‘69, Livin’ on a prayer - and don’t get me started on chuffing sweet Caroline. I remember the days fondly where you could attend a high level sporting event and it wasn’t compulsory to play and sing that monstrosity. Overexposed to death. I personally detest it. Doesn’t make it an objectively bad song though - clearly not.

Anyway, the performances of Acquiesce and Champagne Supernova were highlights from Sunday for me - though to be honest I was gripped from start to finish and my seventeen year old was absolutely mindblown.

I have a few U2 albums in my dusty old cd collection; my mum used to like REM. I can honestly say I’d not put them in the same league as Oasis. Personal preferences are just that I guess. I would like to see both live and would gladly pay to do so - but I wouldn’t pay what I did to sit up in the gods on tier 5 in Wembley Stadium to see oasis - all I could reliably get without risking viagogo or stubhub and they have stung me in the past - the level of interest and money changing hands for this oasis tour is absolutely barmy.

Meanwhile my Mrs condoned me spending so much on this past weekend - but is much more excited at the prospect of going to see Busted Vs McFly later this year. Each to their own I guess. (Yes I’m going too…)

 

Similarly Creep by Radiohead. Wouldn't make their top 50 songs.

 

Overplayed can spoil a song for me mate. Or worse if you can't stand it to start with.

They’re entertaining live. They put on a cracking show but I’m not a big fan.

The weird thing is the lead singer is 39 & older than the Arctic Monkeys which makes some of the lyrics & the way he dresses seem a bit strange.
