I think we sold Bradshaw after a couple of games under Stendel aswell The Pinnock deal in my opinion was poor as we paid about £800000 for him and Brentford (if I remember right) had just sold their best CB for £10m a few weeks before. They signed Pinnock and Jansen (given a fee by Leeds) in the same week (and he was arguably one of the best CBs in the division) and still had money in the bank
I thought we paid 500k for Pinnock. We sold him for 3million and paid fgr a %. Poor business. We paid FGR over 600k for Kitching
Well have to agree to disagree he was our player of the season. Think he also got players player was in the team of the season infront of some good center halves. He looked miles too good for league one imo and I wasnt wrong as he was a regular for Brentford in a promotion side who had the best defence in the league he then went on to play regularly in the Premier league. 3million will go down as one of there best signings.
Have to say I think £3m for Pinnock for a player with one years experience in L1 in 2019 was a fair price given he had one year left on his contract. One of Conways big **** ups was publicly declaring if a player has a year left and won’t resign we would sell them. Morris though £3m was poor.
It was also the selling of 2 center half's at the same time bringing in 5millon and then a few more quid selling Moore. Then going full scattergun. Bringing in loads of players with zero experience Clarke odour, hapo halme, Patrick schmidt etc then declaring it the best window ever. Conway was a great salesman but talking ***** can only last so long before you get sussed out.
I think on the whole as fans we expect better players to be sold. I think the major issue for us is that we havent tried to replace with similar quality and gambled to a point - ie if we brought in £8/9m for Pinnock/Moore/Lindsay etc then you'd hope to see 6/7 players brought in at £1m - so that 3 areas are weakened but 6/7 areas are addressed and possibly bringing in better quality - there's been no speculate to accumulate , it always seems on the cheap
Am not sure thats correct not that it matters like. Pretty sure he had done nothing up in Scotland with Hibs and he came on trial with us because no other championship club wanted him. The problem was we gave him a 1 year contract, at the time we probably didnt want to risk any longer but after he started performing we should have offered him a new deal. Once west ham came calling we were never going to persuade him to stay.
Bang on, buy a couple of players at 500k, sell for £3m-£5m bring in a couple more at £1m and then sell for £5m + etc etc. Unfortunately we didn't move through the transfers like this and decided to buy five 300k players from the first sales.. The "Spreadsheet" was never going to last, other clubs started to do similar and had much better recruitment and money at their disposal.
We've basically been caught out thinking we could constantly find 3/4 players every season to polish up , yet the reality is they're getting hoovered up left right and centre by bigger clubs with bigger carrots to dangle - what we've lost sight of we need players for the here and now, smattered with some of these types in the squad (such as academy players). We're now seemingly trying to develop players on the job - which comes with erratic results and confidence beatings - and we dont have time . Alot of good pro's are now dropping down the leagues quicker than ever into the lower 2 divisions as everyone chases the golden ticket of the PL , and we're overlooking them and instead attempting to polish 25 turds from the welsh 9th division (allegedly) all at the same time. A chef could sprinkle parsley on a pile of dog crap and make it look fancy, but it will still taste like crap - bad analogy and all that!
We speculated, we lost. There is no guarantee spending larger transfer fees brings success. We've plenty of samples where we have outlaid a decent fee and we've ended up writing it off completely. I'd also suggest, the more you spend on a player, the larger their wages are likely to be... And we tend to struggle with being able to afford that aspect.
We replaced Pinnock and Lindsay with the likes of Andersen, Halme, Diaby and Helik. So I guess you’re right, in terms of not spending any extra. But we did move two of those on for big profits, after they’d played their parts in the great escape and then a playoff tilt. I think Collins was as good as Davies in goal. Morris and Dike eventually helped fill the Moore void I suppose. The big issue was the summer post-COVID. With no CEO in position. We all know what happened next. I’ll leave others to judge that period. But the years that have followed that were made miles more difficult because of that summer. In my humble opinion. I do agree with your comments regards other clubs following ours and others’ recruitment policy. And once the new rules came into play, limiting our ability to sign certain players from overseas, that was a blow also. We can come again though. Just needs the right folk in key areas and all singing the same song.
Did we ever reinvest the fees for Moore.pinnock and lindsay back in the squad? If you include the fee from potts the window before and use the biggest fees quoted its about 11 million quid.
I think you’re right about the overseas aspect, we lost access to a huge pool of players under the new rules.
The idea was to buy relatively cheap sell on at a big profit and repeat. The best example at the time was Lindsay.Bought for 200.000 sold for 2.5million,reinvested in Anderson for 900.000.
I get that but he bought loads of players like halme odour and was reported we paid 900k for schmidt which let's be honest he was *****. I just was saying we got alot of money in was it all reinvested in the squad?
This just isn't true with this board. Why do people keep pretending it is true? Weve done excellent business.
The club have sold players at a decent profit yes, the real issue is that the profit has not been invested back into the team very well. Defenders are generally easier to come by as good coaching can improve defensive players. Strikers don’t improve as much with coaching, it’s more of a gift. Don’t get me wrong, there are some very gifted defensive players out there who go for silly money, Mads is the perfect example. He arrive very raw, positionally appalling and so poor he was dropped. He turned into one of the best centre halves we’ve had in 30 years. Pinnock, Lindsay, Mawson and Roberts are more examples. I’m struggling to remember a striker who we’ve improved? I’m sure there is one?
personally I like to perpetuate it, because after years and years of seeing it happen I want it to stay in peoples psyche to keep the pressure on and see there is no backsliding! Plus when you see deals at other clubs I think there is always room for improvement.
Didn't Devante Cole have one of his best seasons here. Vaz Te resurrected his career too ,Winnal got himself a good deal at Fowls also just 3 off top o my head.
