Its not about one specific player though, its about the overall approach and intent. If the club persist in buying players like Hymer Cheappunt from the French 6th division then we'll know their overall strategy.
Last season we signed mainly players from UK most of which who had played at L1 or higher. Only Clement came in from a lower foreign level. Can't imagine that'll change again this season
Whilst I know they're not entirely accurate, the league ranking thing has the French 2nd tier above League 1.
It’s not about where they came from, what level. We signed Shea and Dike from the MLS. One prospered, the other used two fingers. We signed Pinnock from FGR who had just been promoted to the EFL. He’d been proper non league until then. But we also signed Phenix from non league. Peter Sand was Danish, like Mads Andersen. For Arjan de Zeeuw see Carel Van der Velden. Etc. It’s about spotting talent, and then attitude. And then you need to support them as staff, give them the environment necessary to flourish. If we are to sign overseas lads, it’s much easier early in the summer. Get them in early, full pre-season etc. Help them acclimatise. Saying that, Dike was here 24 hours after making his US debut and he was fine. And Sollbauer, if we ignore Charlton away.
In the first 10 days of the transfer window so far, only Plymouth have paid a fee for a player in our division.
Feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity, Head Coach in place and a transfer window 2 weeks earlier than last season and we are no further forward at the time of writing.
Makes a mockery of the statement that we’re planning to do our business early in the window though, fees or not. We say it every summer and it never happens.
Only 10 L1 clubs have not yet made at least one signing up to press. Of the 10, at least 5 are 'nearing completion' of deals according to their local press and a couple of the others were involved in the play-offs. This and the next month is the point in time where clubs get or miss out on the players they have targeted. It's also the time to get people in so that they are part of pre-season which as we know failing to do gets seasons off to a sub-par start and probably also impacts fitness levels throughout. No need to panic as yet but, for anyone who still cares about challenging, rather just a continued declining existence you'd want to see most if not all activity completed over the next month, starting with at least two strong athletic centre backs who can actually defend - it would be negligent not to.
Conor did comment on the amount of talent out of contract week's back.. it's just the casting of our net hasn't managed to capture any yet.. Maybe our net has a Mladen sized hole in it..
If we want wingers for the new system, here's three: Ethan Archer (Cheltenham Town) somebody has had an offer of £150k turned down, but I would have thought £200-250 would buy him; Speedy and scored a few, but can disappear from games; Ethan Williams (Manchester United) - similar to Archer; Chem Cambell (Wolves) - did well at Reading last season on loan. BTW I bet Hudders fans are wondering why they didn't see the same Sorba Thomas who played a blinder for Wales last night. We were after him at one point when he was still a non-league player with Boreham Wood. The Championship vultures are circling for Paudie O'Connor, but I still think we should keep this iron in the fire in case the others don't work out - maybe they can't offer him regular first team football etc. It worked with Mawson when we signed him from Brentford, as Birmingham City of the Championship wanted him, but we offered him the captaincy and a regular start. Bargaining chips can clinch deals.
Wigan have just signed 25yr left winger from Kilmarnock.. Wonder if he was who Conor was asking Marley Watkins about..? Not that it matters now anyway
Donny signed a winger from Kilmarnock too and Bradford a centre half from the same club. Does make me wonder if one of the three was a target of ours.
