I don't know how you can argue with the music, proof is in the pudding - look at the crowd reaction and the atmosphere, there's your answer, it's not Barnsley v Northampton on a drizzly October afternoon. Too many individual tastes rather than seeing what worked. I thought Callum may struggle in this one and his thoughts were too far ahead of this fight. His corner should have knocked him down a bit pre match. But he showed great character to get back up and win but he's not world title material yet. Jean and James were in the box a few feet behind me, hopefully they felt the good atmosphere but you'll never get those people in Oakwell for football - a lot of the crowd were couples out for the night out so there's no point comparing.
It's the first time we've seem him properly hit, and going down. It was always going to happen at some stage. The fact he wasn't hurt was a good sign, and neither knockdown knocked him off his stride. He continued to be the relentless animal that he is. He embodies all that is Barnsley, in boxing form. Bit rough around the edges, spoils a lot of his good work, but you know there's something there. What he said post-fight was spot on. He hasn't just waved a BFC scarf and then hoped the town got behind him. He's personally spoken to everyone and anyone. He's at BFC games, he's in town, local pubs, the community. He will give anybody a minute of his time. He's invited everyone along on this journey having seen what it did for Hatton, Warrington, Brook etc. But like you say, it's a hell of a pressure to carry. And I'm with you. I'm on holiday, so I didn't see it in the flesh, sadly. But it was an immense feeling of pride seeing the club/stadium put on an event like that, watched by millions around the world. Flatman, Hayes, their staff behind-the-scenes, the council, Boxxer, Sky... hats off to them all. It's amazing what can be achieved if everyone believes in something and you're all reading the same script. I hope that rubs off on the actual purpose of BFC - creating a team to be proud of and a stadium/experience that matches it.
East stand was pretty much packed out apart from the family area and the top corner near the corner stand. Ponty and north were pretty much empty, but the Edwards family and fans were in there and when he was fighting sounded like there were 1000's of Welsh behind us Pitch was rammed, having a poor undercard probably hurt the early attendance but from half 8 onwards it seemed to fill up
No, deffo BBC said 23,000 see link to report, makes you wonder about the level of journalism https://www.bbc.com/sport/boxing/articles/cx2j42gkpxvo
Charlotte Coates will not have been there. Her 'report' will be written based on reading other reports. She'll probably have read some bravado 'sell-out' reported somewhere, done a quick check of oakwell capacity, and so reported as 23k.
James and Jean used to be very regular at oakwell even when our other "owners" not so much. Glad they were there to witness it it was a great night. I saw alot of older blokes who used to be regular at oakwell but now not so much in attendance.
To be fair jeffers was arrogant pre fight but if he had won it would have built up a great domestic clash between him and callum. Yorkshire v Lancashire. He lost but was complementary towards the barnsley crowd after.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/b...roadcaster-promoter-Ben-Shalom-comes-end.html Future Simpson fights might not be on Sky.
I think fighters like callum, whittikar and eubanks jnr will be fine regardless probably end up boxer on dazn rather than sky.
Had to call into town this lunchtime and said hello to Callum walking through with Zucco showing him the sights!!!
Think Callum took him for lunch in the Salt House, nice touch that obviously got great respect for each other.
