Yeah, I know. But they weren't getting the chance this time. What they offered was akin to robbing me. I know that selling private can be a frustrating and painful process but at the end of the day, 2 grand more means it is worth it. Was to me anyway. I was quite worried about how easy it would sell and whether I would be plagued by time wasters and tyre kickers. But it went well, thankfully.
Last year we bought my partner’s son’s RAV4 and took our three years old Yaris to Arnold Clark on the outskirts of York. They had offered a decent price online so we thought let’s give it a go, expecting nothing like the initial offer. Imagine the surprise when that online offer was honoured. The whole process took less than 30 minutes and the money went to my bank immediately. We had barely lost anything on the original purchase price so I was very impressed with this company.
The pitch (!): We Buy Any Footballer. Sweep up disappointing signings and flog them to Luton with a big markup. Sounds fanciful but it used to work.
I once sold a LHD Yaris back to the French dealer we bought it from and thanks to fluctuations in the exchange rate got more back in GBP than I'd paid for it 3 years earlier. That was a good deal.
That's good to know as I'm wanting to px my own car in a couple of months time, and I've had a few online valuations of between £1,700-£2,300 with different garages, including Arnold Clark. I honestly don't think I'll get more than £1,500 due to some light bodywork damage, but it's good to know that it's not always smoke and mirrors.
I did an enquiry with Motorway last week for my wife's 18yo Audi, as we've replaced it with an EV on her salary sacrifice scheme. They ask for details and plenty of photos (done via their app in a guided manner) and then generate a reserve price for one of their auctions. Typically this will start with a 'showroom' valuation and it then takes a phone call to get the corrected one, at which point you confirm if you want it to be included in their next auction. In the end we had someone local interested so didn't go beyond this, but it seemed a better option than WBAC, whom I've sold a car to previously without issues, and were OK provided you anticipated the price reduction on inspection as part of the overall process.
