The game appeared to be stopped temporarily for it. We thought there was a medical emergency to begin with, and then it became clear what was happening. Just before our 4th goal, there was a bloke being dragged down towards the bottom of the stand, and a young lad (I think it was the one wearing black in the video) literally climbing over people to get to him. Credit to the stewarding staff, they were responsive and seemed to diffuse the situation.

I really don’t understand once it gets to the point of ‘violence’ the police aren’t straight in to drag them out rather than letting stewards struggle with them - and yesterday end up getting thrown down the steps.

Probably because, as soon as the Police come inside the stadium, we have to pay for their presence I imagine.

Simple answer... Football clubs don't have to pay police to police football matches unless the club request them to intervene inside the stands. At that point they're footing the bill, so tube clubs request is that the police don't get involved unless necessary. Unless there's an Article 2 issue, police will leave it to stewards to resolve.

welcome to the increased costs to the club of policing safe standing areas.

That's not correct. The club pays for police attendance at every match the level of which is determined at the start of the season. Responsibilties of both the club and police is complicated. One of the main reasons is that the enforcing authorities for health and safety differ. The enforcing authority for the Police is the HSE whilst for the club it is the local authority. there is a rigid protocol as to whether the club (stewards) or police address an incident. Some years ago I wrote this paper which was published which explains the legal complexities.

The club have been fined before and had threats of fines for persistent standing in that area so I think it's a good idea the safe standing
