Just watching the build up to their match against Switzerland and I can't help but feel a kinship with the Tartan Army. Plus whenever meeting Scots, they often seem similar to us Yorkshire folk. I struggle however to bond with your Basildon Geeza and Ingerrluuund English fans. For me, us in the north of England have a lot more shared with the Celts than Little England. That said, I'd always want us to beat Scotland as the north are still represented by Stonesy Anthony Gordon, Trent and the like.
I can see your point tbf - the build up to this game has been brilliant. I just wish our fans were as well behaved.
Theyve all got orange hair, drink tennents, have rotting teeth and wear funny checked attire as far as I'm aware. I'm sure I read that somewhere or am I misinformed?
I must admit, that it is deffo more heartwarming to see 2 kilted Scotsmen holding an umbrella over a local in a wheelchair in the pouring rain, whilst getting wet through themselves, than to see an England fan holding up a a toy world war 2 bomber aircraft and a number of his colleagues cheering and singing.
I can’t take this seriously. The nice Scottish fans who set fire to an English flag in Cologne or the 3 arrested for kicking a woman in Munich. I was in Germany last weekend for the Serbia game and apart from a few idiots I had a great laugh with fans of Birmingham city, Middlesbrough, Oxford, Halifax and Dulwich hamlet. Even had a laugh with a Wendy on the train up. I never feel threatened when watching England and I get frustrated when people judge Ingerlund fans with little knowledge of what happens. I can assure you I’ve seen a lot of questionable behaviour watching the reds.
Fair enough, that's interesting to hear and like you say, all teams have a majority of sound followers let down by idiots. Taking behaviour out of it, I just often feel more in common culturally with Scots than people from other parts of England when I meet them.
Real life, yep. More in common with Scots than southerners, even midlanders. But football? Nah. F.eckem. *****
The Scottish supporter mindset is different to England's. They hope to win. England expect to win. They therefore need to be more interested in anything but the match itself. We do become more like Scots during penalty shootouts. Cos we expect to lose. The BFC supporter mindset might be similar to the jocks though. After years of finishing above the relegation zone in the second tier, you get used to losing.
Exactly this. Culturally/socially etc I feel us northerners are more in tune with the Scots than with the south of England. I don't have any ill feeling towards them in a sporting context either. Most of my in-laws are in Scotland, and they're a great bunch, so I suppose that sways me.
Great post mate, Loads on here just talking about what they see on telly. Glad to hear from someone who actually was there to witness things.
I do. For a start they’re not pig ignorant arseholes who boo other teams national anthems. And it’s not a minority. I have ears.
I don't identify with 20 stone Barry from Southend who drinks 20 pints of Carling, sings racist songs, thinks he won WW2 himself and starts fights he can't finish. Nor do I identify with Orange Billy from Milngavie who loves the Queen, hates Catholics, drinks a bottle of scotch and plays the pipes then falls over watching Scotland lose...again.
