Have to disagree on that one. Stones much more rounded but Terry was a proper defender and leader. Lacked pace and was a prat off the pitch but his defensive ability was top class. Always knew where to be. Terry never be able to do what stones does at city but that's a sign of how things have changed and we expect players to do more than before. Defenders need to be able to dribble ball out. Keepers need to be able to pass like a midfielder etc.
Stones is better than both Campbell and Terry (who were also excellent) I think. Ferdinand / Stones is a tougher call but would say Stones just pips him. Stones is up there with the very best imho
As an all round footballer Stones is better than any of them. Ferdinand is probably the most similar in style, but didn't give the side as many attacking options as Stones. Much as I despise Terry as a human being, Stones and Terry would be my dream pairing at the back.
John Terry’s an awful person but he was outstanding. In the conversation for greatest centre back of the premier league era. His passing gets underrated, very comfortable on his left side and allowed his right footed partners to play on the right throughout his career. Best header of his generation & I’d argue best leader. He ran that Chelsea dressing room. It didn’t matter how big of an ego their new signings had they to fall in line or they were gone. It all fell apart after he left. I’d rank him above Campbell & Rio too. He was at the top for about 14 years. That takes some doing. He rarely missed games. Stones has had loads of injuries & Rio was pretty much done by 30 as a top level defender. His body was knackered.
Lampard sc lampard scored 20+ goals a season from midfield! gerrard was quality in a poor Liverpool team.. Bellingham is no where near that level yet! And stones gets nowhere near Rio or Terry.
For an attacking full back who gets forward as much as he does his return on assists and goals is awful he can’t cross or pass and his pace makes up for his lack of positional sense awful..
Bellingham has already achieved more and had more difference making performances for England than Gerrard had in hos whole career (i mean positive difference making, not last minuge underhit backpasses). Plus he has beaten Barnsley, a feat never achieved by Gerrard ;-)
This is the problem with comparing players/eras. There is no doubt what you’ve said about Stones v Rio is correct but Rio was never given the opportunity to play in the same manner as Stones. Rio was actually a goal scoring midfielder until West Ham moved him to a CB at 14 so had the ability.
Just won the league title with Real Madrid. How many league titles did Gerrard win? Scored more league goals in a season than Gerrard ever did too.
Rio could do the Stones role. Yes roles have changed but both Stones and Rio have the quality to offer more than defence only
Fair comments but that doesn’t mean he’s achieved more. You could argue back to that, how many FA Cups, League Cups has Bellingham won? If Gerrard had moved to RM he would have also won the League. As for goal scoring: Gerrard for Liverpool scored a goal less than every 3 games, for England is around 1-5 Bellingham for both is around 1–10 even with the last fantastic season. Oh and according to Google Gerrard scored 23 goals in 2005/6 season same as Bellingham this.
Could you? He's 20 years old. And at 20 years old he's just won the Spanish League and Champions league double, finished top scorer in La Liga and won the player of the year in Spain.
Just had a look at these stats Gerrard played 710 games for Liverpool and scored 185 goals. A goal every 3.8 games. Bellingham has played 218 professional games and scored 51 goals, a goal every 4.3 games. Gerrard was 25 before he scored 50 goals and had more than 300 appearances to his name.
That's a fair point. Ferdinand was a brilliant player without any shadow of a doubt. But the way Stones plays football is pretty revolutionary. If we win either the next Euros or World Cup, I think he'll be spoken about in the same terms as Moore and Beckenbauer in years to come.
Yes and Bellingham is only 20 so how could he possibly have won as many cups as a player who played until his mid 30s?
