Attention turns to the football league trophy now and the visit of 2 time winners, Grimsby Town. The bookies have us as 4/5 favourites at present, based probably on league status. However as its not yet clear how many changes will be made by either team, this could easily represent poor value.

Grimsby currently sit 2nd in the group after a 2-2 draw and subsequent penalty defeat to Man City U21s last week. A heavily rotated Mariners side conceded 2 early goals. The visitors then had a man sent off, allowing the hosts to get a foothold back in the game. Eventually drawing level and having a late winner disallowed for offside, before succumbing to the Sky Blues on penalties.

Having finished in mid-table last season, Grimsby haven't kicked on so far this season, currently finding themselves in the middle of league 2 again
That being said, their only league defeat so far of the campaign was away at current league leaders Notts County. Their latest result was a victory against then 2nd placed Gillingham, showing signs of progress for the Mariners, who are a point (and division of course) worse off than us at present.

This will be our first meeting at Oakwell since 2003, when a goalless draw was played out in the Gudjon Thordarsson era, and our first competitive meeting at any venue since the infamous Isiah Rankin derby in 2004. We're unbeaten in our last 4 home meetings with the Mariners, however that includes 3 goalless draws.

Inexperienced referee Ruebyn Ricardo takes charge of this one. He has issued just 8 yellows and a red in his 3 games this season, all in the National League. He's never taken charge of either a Barnsley or Grimsby game. He officiated in only football league game towards the end of last season, between Crewe and Swindon, issuing 3 yellow cards.

Absolutely no idea what side we'll put out. The likelihood is that Cosgrove may get a run out, and I reckon O'Keeffe and Dodgson, with them all joining recently. Probably De Gevigney too. Based on the likelihood of Grimsby rotating 7 or 8 against Man City, and bringing a couple of their regulars on in the second half, I fancy us to win 2-1 with Marsh and Cosgrove on the scoresheet.

I never want a Barnsley side to lose. I'm going 2-2.

Grimsby appeared to rest about 7 or 8 vs Man City U21s last week.

Field a side with as many changes as the rules allow, get some minutes and fitness for our fringe players and new signings. I think you need at least five players who’ve either played in one of the last two league games or have played a decent number of first team fixtures in their career. That should be easy enough to achieve without any of the starting eleven on Saturday needing to play.

Not too fussed about the result, treat the games as match practice for the up and coming kids and those returning to fitness etc.

    From efl website .....

"All EFL Trophy matches will be streamed by Clubs, except for the Semi-Finals and Final, which will be broadcast by Sky Sports."

Maybe this means it will be on Ifollow.
