But walking up Oakwell Lane after a Mach it’s not practical for everyone to be on the pavement. Too many people and too narrow a footpath. I still don’t know why it’s not closed to cars for 20 minutes at the end of the Match

I agree. I was just pointing out that the people arguing that pedestrians are allowed on roads are aren't really painting the whole picture.

I don't think it should be closed fully but much like nearly every other road around Oakwell there should be one way in place and parking rules need to be enforced. No need for the carpark to sit for ages if proper segregation was applied on grove Street for a start. No need for beevor court to be closed if they applied the law too.

The car park is a Joke, I agreed to try it yesterday to save my Dad a walk but we wont be doing it again - apart from the unnecessary stress as to whether you will be there in time as you sit in the queue on Pontefract Rd - we made it with 8 mins to spare but another day we could be a couple of minutes late, sitting for well over 30 mins after the game before anyone is allowed out is just dumb. I timed 46 minutes to get out yesterday and there were plenty of cars still in behind us
Also which safety bod thinks is a great idea to close the main car park gates up at the corner of the West and Ponty and just leave 2 narrow pedestian gates open so there is a crush of people trying to leave from the Ponty and East to get into Grove St, fighting those from the West trying to get into the car park. Thats stupidly dangerous and an accident waiting to happen. Open the big gate FFS and just don't allow the cars out until the crush has died down

That's a bit harsh on the lad. What's he done wrong to the USA?

The additional extra time being added doesn't help either. It was well past 5pm when the match finished. Then to hold cars back a further 30 minutes is hardly an incentive for anyone to use that car park.

This is what I think would improve things massively.

A box junction painted on Pontefract road outside grove Street so that no cars should block the junction. That would allow free passage out of grove Street but also mean that neither cars exiting or cars on Pontefract road block the area.

A full closure between the posh carpark and the main carpark to limit how many vehicles go through beevor court.

A full closure across grove Street to actually stop cars who exit via the top gate from circumventing the right turn only rules. At the moment they turn right then do two lefts and come back onto grove Street defeating the object.

A closure at the entrance to beevor court, entrance to grove Street and top entrance to Oakwell view. This would ensure that the roads don't get blocked and allow plenty of space for pedestrians to safely walk.

The yellow lines would be the designated exit routes away from the stadium and it would create distinct separate routes out which would reduce the queues of people turning across each others paths.
From the top gate it's right along grove Street, up Belgrave road and down queen Street and to the harborough hill slip roads (both directions).
From the bottom grove Street side gate the route would be turn right along Pontefract road and up lambra road. This would mean the only place the two sets of traffic would meet each other would be at the high capacity and already signal controlled Alhambra roundabout.
From the bottom gate next to the burger van it would be left turn only along Pontefract road or straight over and up Oakwell view which would be one way only to provide safe passage for pedestrians.
The posh cars in the east stand carpark would exit via beevor court. The capacity of the carpark would limit the amount of cars and by closing the entrance to beevor court it would ensure that there is free and clear passage for any emergency vehicles to access the stadium.

All the exit routes would have cones out to prohibit parking which, if enforced, would maintain safe passage for emergency vehicles and pedestrians alike.

Away coaches would be taken down beevor court and turned LEFT towards cundy cross in the way that worked perfectly well for years before it was changed.

And it wouldn't take much change to traffic management costs as those needlessly closing harborough hill slip roads would be re-sited to the other locations. The only extra expense really would be in the one off painting of a box junction.

The key to making it all work would be actually enforcing the rules. Something that the council have been woeful at. They could actually make money by sending a traffic warden round to check that people aren't parked where they shouldn't.

Regardless, something has to be done because the current situation is unacceptable
