I've now had a quick look through the minutes from 2019 and find the following interesting: 5. Consider whether the former Oakwell Brewery site could be utilised for match day parking. - Barnsley MBC Ongoing and 6. Consider whether alternative egress routes could be adopted for Oakwell to support both segregation of home/away fans and encourage the use of the Lambra Road route for access/egress e.g. guided use of Beevor Court route for home fans from East and South Stands? - Barnsley FC ONGOING Barnsley MBC have drafted some initial proposals in consultation with SYP for BFC to consider, agreed for further discussion with BFC SAG I wonder why in 2019 Beevor Court was being considered as the access route and what has changed that led to it being fully closed instead?
Sometimes I wonder how people make it from their driveways to their front doors.? Elderly & disabled supporters is a different issue: But that accounts for a small percentage. I’m overjoyed that we finally have a decent bus service through Wentworth. It will take me all the way to the Dove & home again after football. You lot would take your bloody cars to bed, if you could.
Id love a decent bus service here in Farnham but here its virtually non existent - one bus an hour into the town but it stops at 5 pm The service when I am at my Dads is much better, I could get the bus from Wombwell to Barnsley matches when I am up there and have done in the past but the- problem is Dad isnt up to walking down Oakwell lane these days and definitely not up to walking back up it to get the bus back which is a shame.
They are recommendations only in the same was as when my wife suggests I might like to do something. In theory you can ignore or refuse but in practice the consequences are quite serious. See Gallys earlier post about the risk of corporate manslaughter charges if something does go wrong. So given the current recommendations old fan gets hit by a car in the car park at 25 past 2 - unfortunate accident and probably driver to blame. If it happens 10 mins later the club is to blame because they ignored the SAG recommendations
Dave, I have often thought the club should have its own match day bus service. For situations just like this.? Selected pick up points in a limited radius of Oakwell. & take people home afterwards. & of course pay a reasonable fare to cover the expense. I’m not anti cars, but there’s reason we lose our public transport. People don’t use it enough, especially in out of reach places like Farnham & Wentworth, for example. Meanwhile, everyone is getting peed off, stuck in their Audis, with the engine going, looking for somewhere to park. I know fit & able people who drive to Oakwell & only live 20 minutes walk away. An old artist pal of mine had this wonderful scam going on, back in the 90s. He worked as a school caretaker, 2 minutes walk from Highbury. He’d open up the big playground on match days & charge Gunners fans £5 to park. He’d have 50 cars in there, every match day. School installed cctv, he got rumbled & lost his job..
Who is it that closes/Barriers off grove st during the game. (Not the car park exits) and for what purpose. only to start removing em. 10 minutes after the game. ? Can't see BFC being responsible for that. I can only see it being the Sag group advising the highways/council. As for police. Barnsley fc have no input into policing outside the ground although SYP have tried to charge for the operations. But I believe have to pay for part resources inside the ground. Hence stewarding is much cheaper. And police do not get involved in anything unless it gets out of control.
Is your wife related to mine or do we think it’s a specialist school they attend? in terms of the SAG, you are partially correct in the recommendations etc but the SAG do not complete the RA the club do if the the RA is valid and shown to be competent it is highly unlikely the club would be liable. It’s also highly unlikely that that either the Police, Ambulance Service or Council would be needed to advise on how to control a car park etc that would 100% be the club although they might take advice to come to that conclusion.
I find it hard to believe its the club that have decided to close the home car park 30 mins before Kick of. That has to have come from the SAG presumably concerned that fans walking through it whilst cars are entering is an unacceptable risk I note also that only the South and East Car parks are mentioned as having their gates shut 30 min before KO - no mention of the away car park at the North end so I assume away fans can still turn up and park until Kick off
Derby is a great example Lots of pubs from surrounding villages lay on buses ( usually old double deckers) for home fans and charge a fiver return Pubs get a bit of extra revenue and fans can have a drink without worrying about driving home Derby have dedicated parking for these buses and are given priority when leaving Obviously Derby have a bigger fan base than us and the access roads around Oakwell are shocking, but I’ve often thought something similar on a smaller basis could be done
Thanks very much for sharing that, mate. I know nobody wants to hear about Swansea right now, but they are wonderfully progressive with their elderly & less abled supporters. I read about it in the Guardian or somewhere. I’ll try to find the article. They have a safe room at the ground. Where fans can be safe if they feel vulnerable in the stands. Also, supporters can watch the live stream, if otherwise can’t join the stands. There’s a shuttle bus too.
Why would the Police, Ambulance service or Council be concerned about traffic management in a private property? Their only concern would be the impact on the surrounding public areas. My guess would be that the Police/Council have raised potential concerns over the general public on foot approaching the ground and part of the solution is to close early to reduce traffic at that time but the SAG cannot force them to do that.
My point earlier. Club should encourage fans to use public transport. We need to support public transport services, otherwise we’ll lose them.. I don’t drive (although I’m a very good driver, have thrown a fast Porsche around of what’s left of the Neurburgring) ( I got it to 160, then got scared.!!) But not anymore. (Stroke) But I finally have a bus, which will drop me at the Dove on Donny road. The walk back up will ache if we lose. Less so if we win.. COYRs !!
Which seemingly doesn't apply to any other south Yorkshire stadium as none of those have a dedicated sealed off route to the stafium
That is true but the club can and should challenge the suggestions and seek a review. It is completely wrong that one man who heads the SAG can make any decision he wants and there is no possible way if challenging it. What if he said for safety reasons there can only be 24 people in attendance at any game? The club still would t challenge it? Of course they would. And that's my point, they would because they can and they should. They should be taking it to the court and requesting the removal of certain people from the SAG and replacement with others who will treat the club the same as any other club is
Whilst I generally sympathise with your multitudinous gripes, the post above seems to advocate (in criminal type terms) a change of jury rather than advocating an appeal to a higher and perhaps wiser tribunal. This particular problem seems ripe for some kind of judicial review, if this is possible. If it isn't, it ought to be.
What I don't get is Pontefract road on matchdays is gridlocked so why does beevor court need TWO lanes clear? Nothing can get to it so who does it help? If people drive on the correct side of the road wouldnt beevor court always have one side completely clear of traffic simply by utilising the same methods adopted on grove Street? In fact wouldn't traffic actually flow better if all home cars exited via beevor court and grove Street itself was kept clear of vehicles? It would enable a long queue of cars all waiting to turn left and an equally long queue all waiting to turn right thus clearing the actual carpark and therefore the immediate area around the ground much quicker and making a much clearer route for emergency vehicles. It would also separate foot and vehicle supporters. Anyway as I've said multiple times. Access to the stadium is in the north WEST corner of the ground. There are roads leading to the north west corner of the ground such as Bala street and belgrave road. Bala street is one way so cars cannot use it anyway to exit the stadium, belgrave road could easily be closed. This would enable direct access from harborough hill road to pitchside with no traffic. Instead they are sending emergency vehicles down a gridlocked Pontefract road where cars will already be queuing to leave (or arrive), and down a nice empty beevor court to find themselves isolated in a carpark with zero access to the stadium. In order to gain access to the stadium they would the ln have to navigate the carparks. So even if we were to accept that they need more access at afghanioakwell than they do anywhere else the decision to use beevor court for it is completely bonkers and logistically makes no sense as it leaves the emergency vehicles stranded outside the stadium with a nice big exit gate at the opposite side.
It is. I read up on it last night and it can be challenged and the HSE would step i and review things and it absolutely needs to be done.
