Taking all judgment out of the 21/22 season (when the whole team looked poor and were poorly lead) does Moon need another looking at as still having potential? Started 18 games on his loan to Burton, during which time they had an upturn in form moving from bottom of the table near the start of his loan and ending mid table If we’d loaned any other academy graduate to a league one team where they’d done as well we’d be excited about them getting into the first team, but I feel due to Moon taking a lot of blame during that awful 21/22 season we won’t even consider him.
Spectemur agendo. We sent him off to get game time at a decent level and he responded by getting a couple of player of the week mentions. We'd be daft not to consider him, unless somebody wants to buy him for a reasonable price.
Not sure about the last 3/4 games of the season, but Burton fans were raving about him. Seems to have had a cracking stay there. I was excited when he first broke through, I thought he looked really good in his cameos under Val - sometimes played in midfield, then at the back. He definitely got threw in at the deep end last year. Really hope (seemingly hasn't so far) it doesn't scar the rest of his career. Full confidence in Duff & his assessment of Moon, I'm sure we'll have watched every game he's played him whilst on loan.
If we haven't got anyone better than Moon it's time to pack in. He'd be off if I was anything to do with the club. He will have been scarred by his first full season and will need a challenge elsewhere to get over that. Not good enough.
Nothing against the lad personally. I just think he'd be better as far away from the Barnsley first team as I am.
To be fair he never looked good when given the chance in cup games under Duff. But admittedly its hard when your in and out of a team. Under schopp and poya he seemed to play everywhere he gave a goal away and they would just switch him to another position. I thought they were taking the piss at one point. 18 games at burton and good reviews he is from the Midlands I think so he probably enjoyed been closer to home soon. Should come back and be judged by duff as to wether he's good enough.
If Duff wants to give him a go then I'll 100% back that idea and hope he does well. But personally I'd prefer us sell him to Burton or somewhere else and use the funds towards trying to tempt Bobby Thomas back of anyway possible.
I've moaned about him a lot, but I still think it's too early to write him off. I hope that the Burton loan works out like Kane's loan at Oxford. That said, he was absolutely horrific at Port Vale in the pizza cup - like, genuinely Keith Brown/Carl Regan/Brian O'Callaghan level abysmal - and it wasn't surprising when he was packed off on loan shortly after, I don't think he played another minute again for us after that before being sent out.
Go with your gutt in these instances. Why waste a wage trying to polish a turd? That money could be spent elsewhere.
This is exactly my thought process too. Not only is Duff football through & through with years of experience, done multiple coaching courses (like many do) & has done well in every season he's had in a managerial capacity, but he's also greatly earned my trust, respect and backing. He's done brilliant with us and the players, so I won't try to pretend I know better than he does. All entitled to our opinions, I just don't personally think it wise to judge a youth product through the eyes of 2 PE teachers chucking him in at the deep end, in a league higher, when every other player around him equally as rubbish and the club was in turmoil. I don't think I've had this much trust in a manager for years, hence why I'd back him in whatever decisions he makes. I also think it's a low-risk investment from a financial point of view, it's not like taking a risk on someone like Oulare again. If Duff sees something in him & he feels he's comfortable competing in this league, then that'll do me. Perhaps he thinks he'll be decent in this league and if we get promotion, he can be moved on for more profit, I don't know.
I agree, whether he's good enough now or if he thinks he's worth keeping an extra year to send on loan and see if he's consistent enough. He might just think he's crap and snap Burton's hand off at an offer, I dunno. But full confidence in Duff in whatever decision he makes
Yeah that's all I can remember of him from last season. He was awful but hopefully he comes good. Upto duff to make that call.
The loan reports from @Exile suggest that he played his games at Burton on the left of a back three, which was also the position where he had his admittedly rare decent games for us last season. (The 0-0 against Blackburn and win against Derby under Laumann) Sadly he was messed around too much and never played the same position two games running. That left centre back spot is taken by Kitching. Though, the role under Duff might be different to what Burton asked of him. Can’t see Moon making the runs upfield that Kitching does. I’m sure Duff will take a look in pre season and find a role for him. But if he is sold, I won’t be too sad either. Like Styles, it would be a sale without losing a first teamer
