Before anyone says it, this isn’t the big and exciting news Khaled mentioned according to Chron reporter Doug O’Kane

But it’s still big news and exciting :D Looking forward to seeing them play at Oakwell

Nonetheless, it's still big and exciting, and arguably long overdue.

Bit disappointed that there is no mention of Barnsley Women who actually play in a higher league! An amalgamation of the two teams under the new branding might have got rid of some of the confusion that exists at the moment between the two teams.

Didn’t they use to play as part of the club for a period and then leave taking all the players and coaches with them etc?

This Barnsley Ladies team is already in existence. Club just taking them over.

Must confess, this confused me a bit, trying to work it all out. I didn't realise Barnsley Ladies and Barnsley WFC were different things. I just assumed we were talking about Barnsley WFC, which I now don't think is true? My understanding now is that we're actually talking about Barnsley Ladies, which is just getting rebranded as Barnsley FC? Interesting, given Barnsley WFC seem to playing at a level above (Level 4). Will be interesting to see how the two teams go from here, given Barnsley FC will now have access to more resources. So I think next season, this is how they will line up?

Barnsley FC - North East Regional Women's Football League: Premier Division (Level 5)
Barnsley WFC - FA Women's National League: Division One North (Level 4)

Any advances welcome, if this is still wrong...

I think the Barnsley Women are privately owned and some businessman bought them a few years ago to develop it. Lots of chat about them building their own stadium etc.

I can't imagine they'd just want to 'fold' into this so makes sense for club to do their own thing. Can't see both existing in two years time.

Barnsley WFC were originally Barnsley Ladies. A lot of politics involved by 2 blokes, probably not for this forum.

Brilliant!!! I am a bit jealous for younger me but I’m very happy for Barnsley’s young girls of today.

It’s great news for all the girls currently playing or wanting to play in Barnsley, with reds in the community tied in there’s a great chance of young girls getting spotted early and signed up, hopefully a girls academy team can be set up too

You're presuming that Barnsley WFC would have wanted to work with the football club. As far as I'm aware, they're a privately run football club who also happen to be in the town.

Barnsley Ladies already have an affiliation with the men's team.

I believe they're already affiliated with the club. I think this announcement is confirmation that they're turning pro.

I'm told. The 2 don't get on. Shame really. Bit like Bury until recently. Be interesting to see at what tiers they both play at. I think and stand corrected. The women play at an higher level than the ladies.

Edit, sorry, read the article after posting re the tier the ladies will be playing at. (6th)

And after a search. Women 4th tier. Last I heard trying to get a stadium built at Kingston. Presently playing at wombwell.

Turning pro I think is stretching it a bit. Facilities wise they are being given a lift. But on the wages front for example the average wage is £4k pa in the 2nd tier. Lots of talented ladies out there giving up cos of that reason.( Costs em more in expenses to play). According to one article I've read.
Bear in mind they are in the 6th tier so I guess amateur in the main. But the facilities will attract the better players from that section. The Doncaster belles (4th tier) probably the highest profile team in south Yorkshire.
But lack the support that the WSL can give.
