    Just seen this...

Watford staff and players were left furious after the club deducted money from their wages without consent.

The club felt they should be financially contributing to the food they eat at the club’s training ground.

Agree with the 1st paragraph. They should have been consulted and come to an agreement.
And the 2nd tbf. I'm struggling to think of any other walk of life where the employer pays for food. Except on courses. Or subsidised at best.
I know they will present a balanced healthy diet. But it doesn't stop the players shoveling the odd burger when they get home. :)

Elton John is so angry, apparently he nearly did a song about it lol.
What a disgrace though, and I feel sorry for genuine fans when clubs are run so badly like this, by ignorant know-nothing money obsessed owners.
    Sounds familiar dun't it!.

I said this when Elon stopped the free food at Twitter, just thought it was a bit weird as I've never experienced it - you'd have thought, with the responses I got, that I killed all their pets! :D

Is eating in the canteen mandatory? If so the deduction isn’t really fair.

I think it also friends whether this is a significant perk that makes up for other aspects of the job or compensation.

I've done contract work with loads of tech firms and the vast majority of them provided food, from fridges full of snacks through to full meals three times a day. Although I didn't miss the commute once everything went online, losing my free breakfasts was very sad!

Back in the 90s I used to have a friend who worked at a company with a free canteen. His employer paid less than was typical for the industry but most of the employees accepted it as the company was a good employer and the fact that staff were able to get free breakfasts (cereal or cooked) and free dinners.

I think the way Watford have gone about this is dodgy but on the flip side I have little sympathy for players earning 10s of thousands of pounds a week being asked to pay for food. Especially when the average fan (and other citizens) are experiencing a cost of living crisis and in many cases having to choose between eating and heating.
