So, if we went totally electric it wouldn’t tackle the source of most pollution. Extending the ULEZ zone in London will make only the very slightest of difference to pollution but will be a massive bonus to those raking in the dosh by charging £12.50 a day to folk who can’t afford to replace their old vehicles.

 

Air pollution as referenced in this article and greenhouse gas which causes climate change are two different things.

What percentage do these make up of all emissions? I'm sure I heard that cows produce a lot of methane?

 

Don't forget that the expansion of the ULEZ was also forced onto Khan by the government as part of the TfL bailout. So London has to proceed with it, while MPs from the current government use it as a stick to beat Labour with...

I believe the UK is responsible for 2% of global carbon emissions. The people who will have the biggest influence on climate change are in Asia and Latin America. Poor people who are suffering from malnutrition because they are so poor. I would guess they don't care at all about climate change. How many children live in poverty in India?
So cutting our emissions isn't really or more accurately shouldn't be the goal. What we can do as a country is try and make scientific and technology advances that create clean energy. But this energy also needs to be cheap.

 

I don’t agree with you, carbon emissions have to be looked at on a per person basis, not per country, that’s arbitrary. On that basis small countries like Dubai can just crack on emitting greenhouses gases. If you look at emissions on a person basis it’s the rich countries headed by the US, Middle Eastern countries and us that use most. We have to change what we do as one of the leading produces of greenhouse gas per capita.

Per capita makes no difference to the planet though. So while I understand your point we can get them as low as we like but if heavily populated poor countries don't change then it will make little difference. If you are so poor you and your family are suffering from malnutrition I guarantee you don't care about climate issues.

Dropped after last budget and second hand ones have dropped by quite a bit.
In the trade they believe it to be more about the tax efficiency being altered as prior to that they were steadily growing.

 

I know a few people who bought them and have now got rid, saying that journeys get too stressful - nowhere near the range advertised and lack of charging points (impossible to have your own where we live, can’t park near the house more often than not).

 

You can’t help some people, you’d think looking at that would be first thing you would do.
Reminds me of article in local rag about a guy having to have his EV recovered as it ran out.
When you read the article it turned out he had drove from Oxford (to pick it up) and was just outside Skeggy.
You’ll know why that’s laughable as the amount of warnings you get about getting low etc.

People don’t think too much or they act on stuff seen in ads.

Stuff seen in ads: this car looks great and it helps the planet. Great but tells you nowt.

Small print: does 250 miles on one charge. Great but not true as folk find out.

Charging points everywhere: not true as folk find out.

The change to EV is massive. Would have to be backed by the Government. Charging points would have to be as common and accessible petrol stations and your own charging points as common as your water or gas or leccy supply.

 

Good point. I've kept my car for 13 years.In that time I could have changed it at least 4 times. Now I have to change it due to the Ulez zone even though I'd have run it for at least another 5 years.
