There have been legal challenges to these clauses which allow employers to unilaterally extend contractual terms, but nothing has stuck I don't think.. it's unlikely to be one sided, and we'll have some acknowledgement or agreement from the players. As to the point, "if new deals were anywhere near close they wouldn't bother doing this" - I don't agree for 2 reasons: 1. Any player 24+ who is in the last 6 months of their contract is free to start speaking to new clubs and sign a contract to move on as of 1 July. By doing this we stop clubs doing that. 2. It strengthens our position when negotiating for new deals. Say we want Mads til 2026, it's easier for us to negotiate 2 extra years from 2024 than it is to negotiate 3 extra years from 2023. There's also probably wage increases that come along with the extensions so it may sweeten the prospect of staying at the club. It's not groundbreaking news but it's not bad news and it's not spin intended to keep happy clappers clapping happily. It's us being smart and prudent and putting ourselves in the best position to negotiate a new deal or a good fee to, you know, ensure the stability and success of the club in the long run. People will slag off anything the club does and it begs the question, do you even actually support the club? Theres a couple on Twitter that ought to get down to S6 if they want a club that puts money in blindly.
superb news. says lots about our club at this moment. Well done MD for getting these guys engaged and motivated and well done Khaled for getting these deals over the line.
some things will never change. barnsley fans' glasses will always be half empty. if we won the champions league 3 nil against barcelona there'd be some moaning that we should have had 6.
...or mebbe its not about pushing up fees this window. mebbe its about getting the lads on longer term contrats and securing their future at oakwell. mebbe it's the club saying to us that we're back on track with a great manager and a good squad who might, just might get to go up this seasonl.
Puts us in a position to gain a few £££ for any of these players if they are wanted in the summer, but who will want them if we don’t get promotion? They were part of an abysmal team in the Championship last season, & if they fail to get us promoted at the first time of asking then I can’t see many teams wanting to take a punt on them. It’s not really a big deal. What we need to be doing is working around the clock to bring in at least 2 more signings to aid Duff on his play off push. And it’s slightly worrying that it isn’t Duffs decision whether Luke Thomas extends his contract. Of course it should be! He’s the coach, he picks the team. Or does he?
However you look at it, and there's some odd pessimism in this thread, these +1 deals are a good thing. If the player is no good we can get rid, if he he is, we get them for another year (or at the very least receive a fee in line with a longer contract). I'd like to see us move to 2+2 deals. 2 Years initial contract with a subsequent 2 years (on a pay rise) to be triggered at Christmas of the second year, at the club's discretion. After 18 months we should have an idea if they're any good or not. If they are we get two more years, if they're not we were only saddled with them for 2. 1+1 deals for the likes of Norwood who are getting on a bit in football terms.
