I understand they didn't get many takers for the free mascot for quite some time and had resorted to scouting one from the crowd before games so maybe not a let's cash in type of thing. Maybe people didn't know about it, of course. Also, for the point of view of balance, don't forget the club have local jnr football clubs along on matchday to do flag bearing, lead the teams out, put free entertainment on for them in the academy led by Steve and Laurie and their families (so 10 other juniors leading the teams out). They've had a lot of success with this where families come back, buy season tickets etc.
Gally, thanks of course not every child wants to be a mascot and some may not know about the scheme. Possibly some would be put off by having to get the full kit. But what about the BBS approaching the Club asking if there is a possibility of reduced/cancelled admission charge for those children/families who are struggling financially.
Fully appreciate the flag bearers and things they do there butttt..... The club doing such a poor job of getting the word out there that nobody applied to be the free mascot is the worst excuse I've ever heard for making it pay only. If you're a football club with thousands of season ticket holders and you can't think of how to get a couple of dozen families per year to apply for the free mascot position then your marketing department is woefully underperforming. They know, or should I, which adult season ticket holders also buy a juvenile season ticket. How hard is it to send out an email to those adults reminding them of the availability? How hard is it to put posters up in the family stand or even give out leaflets to every kid who goes through the turnstile? I know you're only relaying information but 'nobody applied so we binned it off' is a piss poor excuse and is extremely tinpot.
The club didn't relay that as a reason or excuse by the way. Just heard that's what had happened of late.
After the ending of red zones, and other COVID enforced protocol, a lot of little things the club used to do are now able to be brought back. The executive mascot package is one of them. Not sure if you noticed, but on Saturday against Burton, we had two mascots. One was our first exec mascot of the season, and enjoyed all the trimmings of that experience. Dressing room visit. Playing football with his heroes. Getting autographs, photos and a tour of Oakwell. Then watching the game from hospitality alongside the parent where they enjoyed food and beverage etc, the player of the match presentation etc. His mother has been in touch to say it’s the greatest day of his life. Think she even said as much on social media. The second mascot didn’t have all the trimmings, but got to meet the players, get involved on the pitch during the warm up and walk out with the players. I believe there’s a photo on our match gallery, showing both lads stood with both captains. The second lad didn’t pay. The club has its systems in place to offer such experiences. Alongside the player escort opportunities, flag bearers and so on. We also have lots of kids on our ‘matchday club’ schemes, whose parents drop them off, and who are treated to fun and games in the indoor centre, food and drink and get to watch the Reds. 200 school tickets every week too. By all accounts, we have some of the youngest supporters in the EFL. Clearly doing something right. The number of females attending has increased a bit post-COVID also. Good signs! There’s so many positives around BFC, the last six months has been a breath of fresh air and we are only just seeing the fruits of a lot of hard graft. Lots more to do! And it’s Christmas! Up the Tykes x
I believe the price is cheaper than most. Cheaper than it was pre-COVID even. No idea how it’s all worked out exactly as I’m not involved. But the ‘executive’ part of it, as in, being based in hospitality plays a part I imagine. It’s not just the child remember. It’s an adult too. We’ve a waiting list. A very long one. Happy to see it back up and running after COVID. Glad the first mascot back had an experience he’ll never forget.
Glad the mascot had an excellent experience (Club would have made at least 500% profit from his £180 - meal for two - football etc - photos -- £35 tops -- shame on the Club!) - hope the one who got the second rate experience also had a good time.
