A question about our under soil heating at Oakwell ...

    As so many clubs do not have this it got me wondering about ours.
    First of all I presume ours is fully functional and will therefore be on now.
    Simple question, does anyone have an idea how much it costs to run, how long it has to be on for and is it worth the cost to have it on when we know the games will eventually be played in warmer times.

    Someone reckoned on here around 8 years ago that it cost 4K per 24 hours to run I'd imagine we can probably double that at least now. I believe it has to be on for quite a few days leading up to a match. It can't just be switched on at a moment's notice. I also read it wasn't good if temperatures dropped below -5. No idea if any of this is true though :D

    I heard it was under the soil. Don't know how true it is though.

    Sure there was an article in one of the programs years ago explaining all about the under soil heating at Oakwell. How it works and when it needed starting etc.

    sure the game against spurs in cup when Ginola scored was originally called off for frost or snow despite the under soil heating being installed

    i think you have to have it for P.L. but the match can be called off for public safety because of conditions outside the ground

    Apart from the obvious a warmed playable pitch is trumped by the condition of the terraces approaches to the ground for H&S reasons I suppose it comes down to cost benefit analysis ..i.e. the cost of the heating vs the cost of postponed fixture and rearranging the match. I assume the latter could incur some substantial costs...administration etc.
