    I'd also recommend Jeremy Paxman's history of coal mining in the UK, Black Gold.

    It's a brilliantly researched and sometimes harrowing account of the growth and subsequent decline of the mines.

    Odd that the exhibition is in St Albans and not at a location formerly associated with mining.
