If France were to win the world cup would that make you feel slightly better about England losing to them? As in at least we lost to the best team. Or would it make you feel worse? As in that could have been us. Or would it make no difference?
Makes no difference. I stand by the fact we’re a better side than France, we don’t have a manager capable of getting us over the line in big games…..
no just confirms that I thought the winner of that game would win the World Cup. Southgate needs to have the bottle to go for it against the big teams. At 1-1 we should have made positive subs and tried to win it rather than been happy not to lose
How were we happy not to lose it...bearing in mind in the full knowledge that we'd more than likely lose on penalties? Had Kane not fluffed the penalty this question might not be arising.
I don't think we are a better side than France... probably as good, but it was always a 50/50 game... sometimes it goes your way, sometimes not. If Southgate is not capable of getting us over the line in big games who is?... perhaps I'm wrong but I suspect you don't have a suggestion. People are full of these ideas but no one else has ever managed it except Ramsey... and he lost a quarter final in the following World Cup to Germany having been 2-0 up... and failed to qualify for the 74 World Cup.
maybe had we made subs earlier that penalty would have been to go 2-1up not equalise. At 1-1 Southgate was content that we weren’t behind. Only made subs when forced to try get back into game not to win it
We performed as expected. We are not as good a side as France. If we had "gone for it" they would have ripped us apart. Southgate had his team over-performing and he should stay as manager and give the England team the benefit of his growing experience of major tournament football.
We don't work keepers enough. That's not just England. It's English club football too. When I first started watching Barnsley we had Payton, Rammell, Archdeacon, Redfearn, Taggart and O'Connell couldn't wait to let fly. If you don't buy a ticket you don't win the lottery. I'd love to see a percentage of attempts at goal from 94/95 to now. People say it's more finesse now. I reckon it's tippy, tappy crap. No excuse for getting to the edge of the opponents 18 yard box and ending up back at our own with Stones, Maguire and Pickford without at least having an attempt at goal. I think that's one of our major problems. Lack of creativity. During that twenty minute spell after we equalised a Grealish, Maddison or both was what was required. Henderson and Rice should have come off and Bellingham should have covered Maguire and Stones.
Aye, Mr D, but for all Morocco's possession last night, I wouldn't say Lloris was overworked? On the other hand, we rattled them in against Iran and Wales. So I think it's more a case of the quality of the opposition, missen.
Pure speculation though Andy, had Kane not missed his second penalty we'd have been back in the game... had Southgate subbed earlier and it didn't work he'd have been hammered for that decision.
Did he want to to win or avoid being hammered by the press , in what world was a Mount Sterling substitution better than virtually any other he could have made
I'll watch it cos its the WC Final, but I feel the same about both teams. Dislike France more, especially after Mbappe laughing after Kanes miss. Only pick Argentina, reluctantly as Messi probably deserves one, if only cos it'll really pīss Ronaldo off.
I’ve stated previously that Southgate as done a decent job, but I think by bringing Sterling on as sub showed his limitations when it comes to making the big decisions........Sterling should have been no more than an emergency backup sub following his venture home and return day before game........anybody who thinks he made the right call bringing Sterling on before the other quality we had available on that bench must be in cloud cuckoo land for me!
Going off topic slightly. I don't watch the Premier League, extremely rarely see the Champions League so my question is this. Jack Grealish. Is he actually any good? Because on his limited showings with England he looks nothing more than a show pony.
I think Sterling shows Southgate’s biggest strength and weakness in his loyalty to players. I agree he wasn’t the right option but think he looked at Sterling and thought he was less of a gamble
