    Best eclipse I ever saw was from Brenda in accounts, she bent down to get her choccy biscuits from the bottom drawer and her arse covered her desk lamp perfectly, the timing could not have been better,

    I actually knew Mike Scott a bit back in the day. He wrote me a letter at the time, saying they were releasing this. He was living in Edinburgh & we had a bunch of mutual friends. The "This is the Sea" LP still stands up well as part of the 80's alternative cannon that leaned a bit in the direction of Dylan / Springsteen in songwriting terms, but was more alternative in terms of the music. He then decamped to Ireland & did the Fishermans blues, that was more an Irish vibe. That had some great songs on it. After that I lost interest. Other things in music grabbed me.

    I still have the original 12 inch single. It got reissued in the late 80's / 90's as a lot of acid house DJ's started playing it as an end of the night song. It stands on it's own, but early Waterboys stuff was pretty decent TBH.

    They were great for a while, then Mike disappeared up his own arse with the pagan borrocks, same as you I lost interest.. This is the Sea, is close to being a great album, let down by a couple of weak moments. Sometimes it felt a bit too much style over content..:)

    Yeah. I had all their early LPs and the Another Pretty Face stuff. I kept This Is the Sea, A Pagan place & the 12 inch of I Buried My Heart at Wounded Knee. A lot of stuff inspired by Blake. At a push I Buried My Heart at Wounded knee could be a bit of a start of "woke culture", now the ******* Brexit people would claim him, which is ********. Rees-Mogg, Boris & Truss reading poetry. TBH I was more into Felt, Pere Ubu, the Go-Betweens & the Replacements at the time. If I reach for the records it's always a bit of reverie, but there is something in there, as I don't grip onto the past a lot. TBH.He wrote a few good ballads on the first Irish LP.



    This track is one of the best about loss I've ever heard. Lost a lot of friends down the road. Lost Mum in March. It's not really about bereavement, but loss is loss.

    May have to put up with Chip Wickham's violin...
