That's the date for approved coal merchants (my dad is one which is why I knew this was a thing). Confusingly that link states "Retail outlets in England including supermarkets and garage forecourts are not allowed to sell traditional house coal." Which, if correct, means every branch of Aldi and every filling station has been breaking the law for years. The way I understood it was supermarkets/garages had an earlier date, but that article has me bamboozled.
Russia invading Ukraine has certainly made things worse faster. However this was happening before that as the article you have posted shows. The rising price of Gas was out of control before the war. The article and graph are Pre Russian invasion.
Me too. Not least, I'm wondering why it's ok to continue to sell coal in the Forest Of Dean. Some sort of historical/heritage exemption, maybe...?
set up a standing order. Pay monthly based on readings. I was doing that with Scottish slower until I went with UW who found me a fix for 200!quid.
The price increase for businesses is absolutely criminal. I know it's bad for the public but how the hell have they not put a cap on businesses too? Over £300k they've quoted us for our electricity bill for the next year. It was a third of that this year
Will your company survive that? A couple of my mates who run small businesses are shutting. They just can’t afford it.
the cost of fossil fuels is growing expediently as stocks dwindle. Waffling on a right wing talking point is pointless. We need to move to 100%!renewables as soon as possible. Hydrogen is the technology to invest in. We are starting to use it on our sites. 100% renewable with water as the only bk product.
Exactly this. Hydrogen is undoubtedly the future. And it's getting more efficient as better ways of storing it etc are developed. We should have been much further down this route no doubt if the west's politicians didn't have their pockets full of oil, coal and gas money.
I have no idea. There's only really one way to and that's passing that cost on to the customers which means a huge price hike. Problem is people can't afford the extra prices.
Woodstoves/open log burning fires have been the traditional way of cooking and heating here for hundreds of years in rural/semi rural areas. Even some newish apartment blocks use wood pellet heating. The heating season is shorter than UK (albeit in mountainous areas/foothills it can be very cold as the prevailing winter winds on the Eastern side of the Apennine mountains are from the North East (Siberia). It is a myth that central Italy is warm year round! Trees do grow faster here due to light levels being higher and cut wood dries very quickly over the hot summer months. Low density population in Central and South Italy except for the major cities like Roma Napoli Bari etc. means pollution is lower when most use wood burners. (dry hardwood produces little or no smoke). Mains gas only exists in towns and cities the rest,( like us) use GPL delivered by tankers and has always been very expensive and now outrageously so. Our house is small by Italian standards and well insulated. We have a wood burning Esse cooker (like an AGA) which we only light when it is really cold and which heats the kitchen, living room and landing. The flue pipe in the wall also partly heats our bedroom and en suite directly above the kitchen. If the weather is not too cold we use a small wood burning stove in the living room which also heats 2 upstairs bedrooms via the flue pipe embedded in the walls. We supplement that with underfloor heating upstairs in the bedrooms from mid November to mid April but even with the wood stoves 'ticking over' our gas bills were until recently still around 2k euros a year. Electricity bills were around 1600 euros per year. I expect that to double even with Italian Govt measures since GPL private suppliers can charge what they want. In some ways it is a scam. Our gas is delivered to the tank underground, but they bill us via meter. so if they fill us up in March at the price it costs and then only bill us after a few months when they read the meter they charge us the rate at the time of billing and pocket the difference! We also get a small rebate as we cannot have town gas, but that is deducted from the total bill after the IVA (VAT) is added at 22%. However, a delivery of logs cost us around 450 euros (around 3 metric tons) and that is sufficient to provide fuel for the year for both wood burners and the pizza wood oven outside (which in winter we can use on a mild dry day and which can cook more than one meal on a single firing as it cools slowly over 36 hours. First pizzas..then bread...then roast meat chicken etc.....then finally stews/casseroles, which we can batch freeze. Without that wood, our gas and electric bills would be astronomical. Most Italian rural homes are very poorly insulated and very cold compared to UK homes (often around 15 degrees except where the fire is. Many old properties still don't have CH. Often UK people buy huge farm houses still habitable so only partially renovate them missing out the important insulation which usually needs a new roof (seismic certified and installed by authorised builders) which is very expensive. Fine if you are using it as a holiday home in summer (albeit they can get unbearably hot) but if they then choose to take up residency they have a problem in winter unless they have money to burn. We are fortunate enough to have saved enough to convert to PV/battery system as well as a hybrid air heat pump/gas CH/HW system installed but, in spite of beating the rush, (ordered in May) we will be lucky to get it done this side of Christmas. I suspect the wood stoves will be working flat out from mid November this coming winter!
i have put this on our site on the A63 and I’m just about to put it on another one on the A1 M1. Working beautifully with prices coming down all the time. I expect hydrogen to overtake solar etc in the next 5-10 years. Hydrogen cars are definitely the future. https://www.siemens-energy.com/global/en/company/siemens-energy-ventures/geopura.html
Don’t worry the Times has sussed it out. Just use your employer’s energy, genius. It’s like something out of Viz ! May not be so great when Maureen’s employer goes bust in February due to struggling to cope with its energy bill…
cost to get into office 60 quid a month. Saving removed. Their plan is clearly not at the behest of commercial landlords…
Me every day for the rest of this year leaving for the office. Surprised they didn't suggest showering four days a week as an option.
Wait until you see the bond market . Energy markets are just the tip . We are bankrupt . Take your pick , default or never ending inflation .
Excellent thread here. Shows a way out of their is political will. Also starkly makes the claim for renewables to be phased up to 100 % asap
Very interesting read and probably needs more publicity to force change. Though I accept that's unlikely whilever the scum are in government.
