I must admit, I'm in agreement with Wade about the time wasting we were doing. I loathe it, even when it's us. I don't particularly mind it with 5ish minutes to go, but we started around the 70th mark, add to that we sat back a lot more too. Put it this way, had Collins been Cheltenham keeper and they were beating us, I'd be fuming with the amount of time wasting he was doing at such slim margins
Exactly who has got us down as "one of the favourites for promotion" then? Certainly not me except when I've had a skin-full.
Personally I never noticed that mate. Even a little and I usually do because it's a pet peeve of mine. If it was a cup game, Southend v Man city for instance & southend were winning, it's very understandable. Not in a league game though, especially this early on in the season.
Go back and watch their goalkeeper kick offs. They played for time and played short till we went ahead. They went long and much quicker soon as we scored.
I thought we were lucky to score, it took an isolated moment of quality we haven't seen for a bit. But they could have played while September and not scored.
It disappointed me a little the way Barnsley went into a time-wasting, sitting deep mode for the last twenty minutes. For me that was a chance to exploit a visibly slow, unfit and game chasing Cheltenham and allow the players to find their scoring boots. Up until the goal Cheltenham had set up to frustrate, not exactly eleven men behind the ball, that wasn't the case, but certainly defensive minded. I understand that the three points were vital but I reckon allowing the players to find their rhythm was even more important. Still, a good three points.
I'm not a fan of time wasting, particularly as we seem to let in goals in rhe last 10 minutes of games anyway! But encouraging that we didn't yesterday.
I’m a big fan of Collins’ time wasting. But the ‘sitting back’ isn’t what happened; as soon as we went in front Cheltenham completely changed their tactics, which meant more of the game was played in our half, but the determination to get forward and to score again never went away. In the BBC’s match report linked above, the only significant things that happened after our goal are 2 closely missed chances for Barnsley. Cheltenham set up for a nil nil draw with a hope they might get a cheeky goal. Which is fair enough because our goalscoring record currently is dire.
Ditto mate...I turned to my mate when they got a goal kick and said their goalies suddenly gone off ignoring the ball and standing waving positions to imaginary players....just been highlighted this morning that a report into time-wasting shows goalkeepers are the biggest culprit.
Just a minute here let’s have a bit of balance. There was a spell at the beginning of the first half where we had them under some sustained pressure, and I remember on at least 3 occasions their keeper walked further into the pitch when the ball had gone out for a goal kick. That was a deliberate ploy to slow the game to try and take some momentum out of our game. The ref actually told him a couple of times to get on with it. Yet nothing is mentioned of this. Time wasting or not, it is part of the tactics of a game, it seemingly to some on here, only unacceptable when it’s us doing it
Fair point but it's always a bit more blatant in the last 15 minutes when the team is 1 goal up. And as you say in the other post the ref actually did something about their 'keeper. Maybe he ignored Collins' time wasting as his version of "levelling up"? I'm willing to forgive them based on it being a warm day so it benefitted the players of both sides to get a breather....
That mirrors my sentiments exactly. I was thinking around the 75th minute that Collins was even winding me up. There is no need for it that early. Last 5 minutes I am OK with. I was surprised he wasn't carded.
Hmm maybe but there were at least 6 substitutions and a goal in the 2nd half (3 and a half minutes right there) and a couple of actual stoppages, so 6 minutes seems fairly reasonable to me.
