It's the biggest episode of self harm ever done to this club I think. Having almost screwed us over after our last promotion he succeeded last summer.

I was ranty and annoyed last night so probably went a little overboard. I still do think he is worth 3 million plus and we should get that as a fee for him even if we are a L1 club now. He is not a L1 player he is a full international and a top championship level defender, his time with us has proved that and so therefore we should get a fee that reflects that.

The annoying reality though is that we have been relegated to L1 after a dismal season last year and therefore we have to sell our best players to cover the losses. Clubs know this so they will take advantage and bid lower than market value and we will have to accept it to cover this.

Of course it is better for the long term future of the club to sell him now for 1.2 million than it is to keep him and lose him for nowt and if that is the option we have to take then the club has to do it. Does that mean I am fully happy about it? No, course not. I want us to get a fair price for every sale but of course I would rather us sell him now even for a rubbish fee to help bridge the gap. Last night I was just off on one.

fair dos. I don't think anyone is happy about it. had we stayed up, he would be an international championship centre half and we'd be starting at £5m. but we didn't. and if he's still with us by Christmas I suspect he will no longer be a full international. I imagine he'll be out of the squad and will then be a 3rd tier centre half with 4 months left on his contract. we'll end up with nothing and will still have a hole of around £1.5m. $hit situation, but you can see why it's probably the best - and possibly even the only option - on the table.

If Helik is sold then is Ben Davies a good benchmark in terms of fee?

Transfermarkt have Davies valued at 2.25m but sold for 4.23m - Helik is valued at 2.70m

Personally, I think Rangers have overpaid for Davies and there is probably a premium attached to buying from Liverpool (even though he never played a game for them) but I'm hoping that the minimum we get for Helik - assuming he is sold - is 2.5m. Obviously, it's all hypothetical as it will be undisclosed :)

Big headed people don't do this though. It's always about them and they're never a team player

Liverpool, on loan last season with the play-off finalists, also the fact that he's considered a replacement for Bassey, who they just sold for £20m. You can see how it's a very different transfer negotiation. Apparently it's £3m up front with £1m add-ons.

My previous question was whether relegated clubs immediately had the same £7m or whatever shortfall as we have. Joining in this debate as to whether other relegated clubs have sold their best 4 or 5 players following relegation is slightly different. Good memory though I'll give you that. :)

Rant away mate, this is the perfect place for it.

I'd love for us to get £3m for him, but it's not realistic in my opinion. Last summer, when his stock had never been higher, there reportedly was no interest in him. I guess the sharks start circling when they think there's a deal to be had. We do it ourselves. Would we have signed Cadden (if he was even available) in January when he commanded a fee?

I get where you are coming from with this but it isn't the exact same situation though. Not many clubs would spend a fee on a player when they have 6 months left unless they were totally desperate for that player. Helik also doesn't have 6 months left.

Also, in that situation, FGR were top of the league and looking to get into L1 for the first time in their history. They would not have sold him unless it was for a big fee given his importance. Very different situations.

We just need to get his and Styles' transfers sorted asap so we can move on with a clean slate. Doug says nothing imminent on the incoming front too which is a worry. In my eyes we need 4 or 5 new signings in before the window closes. Ideally 2 strikers, a RWB now and at least 1 centre mid. I said we needed a cm last week to add another option but could maybe do with 2 now given Kane is out injured for the start of the season. Thomas has been playing there pre season and there is also talk of him going too so if he does go then we certainly need 2 new CMs.

Plenty to do and not long till the season starts.

Simple answer of whether other clubs have the same shortfall on relegation is no, if they have a smaller wage bill to start with, and owners that plug gaps anyway. I think Peterborough sold a couple of players in January as well.

Looks like as per usual we will be playing catch up compared to the rest of the teams regarding recruitment, at the minute I just can’t get excited about what’s in store for next season.

Not noticed the other relegated clubs absolutely gutting their teams following relegation. Could be wrong though.

A lot of teams will be in the same boat due to the early start. Even more so with money starting to be spent again after it drying up last Summer.

Fancy most clubs to still be shaping their squad right up until transfer deadline day, so we won't be alone. Nicer to do it earlier, but you can only act when interest and bids is confirmed. I'm note sure there was any interest in Brittain until recently.

It is just frustrating especially when the summer started so well with the positive board changes, Duff's appointment and handful of early signings. Now just gone very flat all of a sudden with a few departures.

I'd definitely be interested to see the numbers for the three teams. we already know the spending that's being allowed at derby is an absolute disgrace. no idea about posh though. would like to compare the two, in terms of their finances pre/post-relegation, and how they are going about dealing with it.
