Newcastle being linked to him as they can't get the strikers they wanted.

To say Toney has come on leaps and bounds since we had him on loan would be an understatement. The lad has become an exceptional striker, ask any Barnsley fan who would’ve had the better career out of him and Ashley Fletcher and I guarantee almost everyone would’ve said Fletcher. Now they couldn’t be anymore polar opposite, Toney is a Premier League striker scoring double figures being linked with Man Utd; whilst Fletcher failed to score a single goal in the MLS last season.

I guess it shows it’s hard to judge players so early on in their careers, Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez looked like donkeys for us when he had them on loan as kids, they’ve both went on to have decent careers. Adam Armstrong at times looked a prospect but was out of his depth generally when we had him on loan, he commanded a £20M transfer fee last summer. Football is very unpredictable and mental sometimes.

Remember going away to Bradford & seeing Fletcher & his first touch & swore he was going to be a Premier League striker. Good look to Toney. Let's hope Vic isn't playing for Man City in 5 years.... unless we have a sell on.

Very interesting point you make. The failure of Ashley Fletcher to push on is a real mystery. He looked to have the potential to become the complete centre forward. Pace, strength, finishing, brilliant at bringing others into the game. Excellent attitude by all accounts as well.

His career was wrecked by injury though, wasn't it? I seem to remember him having constant back issues.

Just shows that for strikers to show their worth and develop that they need to be hungry and play regularly, Fletcher's move to West ham was only beneficial for his bank balance whereas Toney has had a longer route to success but played regular whilst doing it.

Ivan Toney, not anything to shout about at 19 years of age but seven years later with lots of games under his belt he's developed into a genuine Premier League striker. Who'd have thunk it? Talent allied to experience.

For me it proves how invaluable playing proper men's football from an early age is. Toney dropped down the leagues and built back up from there, Fletcher tried to break through pretty much right at the top and it never worked out for him. Might have been a very different story had he signed for us and played regularly.

To be fair i always thought he had potential even on loan to us at 19 and newcastle must have obviously seen this to sign him from Northampton. He then signed for posh and got 16 goals and 7 assists then season after he got 24 and 5 assists then has improved each year getting 15 goals in the premier league last season.
Very few players are reaching there peak at 19 or scoring for fun in league one the ones that do are out of ours and poshs price range. Hence the reason we both sign these players with potential and develop them.
Made me laugh when we were linked to him after kieffer left and fans were saying they didnt want him and if hes worth ex amount whats cauley worth.

Maybe he needs to drop down to league 1 level to rediscover his confidence and show what he's all about?....... Now that is one signing I would be happy about, finances depending obviously.

Watford gave him a 5 year PL deal. Beggars belief really. He must have some agent. Nothing against the lad but for me he’s L1 quality on PL money. I imagine there’s zero incentive for him to drop in standard. He’ll be 30 when his Watford contract ends. Best years just passed him by.

He's set for life then really isn't he. Disappointing as I genuinely think if he's at a club playing week in week out enjoying his football then I think he's a match for anyone on his day.

I'd have him back in a heartbeat, but unfortunately he's unlikely to agree to the drop in wages unless he's more concerned about playing first team football.

The spreadsheet had Tony as our no 1 target in the Summer of 2019 but the coaching staff weren't in agreement and wanted Smith who was at Rotherham. Conway went for Malik Wilks.
