I'm not sure what to make of that. Maybe he's earned enough that he can just focus on locality rather than level. Or maybe it's just a case of a talented player falling through the leagues after failing to establish himself at 3 championship clubs because he never properly applied himself. Pity, but hey ho.
Undoubtedly talented but the guy has the application of a sloth, hence why he now finds himself in League Two. Shame really, he could’ve been a really decent player had he been more @rsed.
Unlucky Leyton. Says it all about his application as we know ourselves, that he's playing in league two next season.
Wont name names but i think theres one or 2 in our current squad who could end up like this have the ability but lacking in application and effort.
I remember when a BBSer broke the news Moncur was leaving us before it had been mentioned or even rumoured anywhere. Can't remember who the poster was now. They dropped on George packing all his stuff in to a car where he lived in Birdsedge.
Can’t believe he’s still only 28. Seems to have been around forever. Sounds like a good move for him.
I'm not sure it's application. I think it's innate physical fitness. If I'd trained just as hard and for just as long I'd still be a second and a half slower than Usain Bolt over 100 metres. Thats 15 metres. And I was pretty fast. I could never get within an hour of a top marathon runner no matter how hard I trained. Moncur trained with all the other players. He was very fit. But at elite level your deficiencies are exposed and he was blowing hard after a couple of sprints. I don't think it was lack of effort, I think his innate stamina wasn't as good, he tired quicker and took longer to recover after each exertion. He'd knock my fitness into a cocked hat, but at Championship level it shows up.
‘Leighton Orient is a massive club ‘ ….. really George . Talented but like others have said fitness and consistency let him down . Wasn’t there some suggestion his Dad was a bit of a pain in the arse
That's by the by in the context of this conversation. He did indeed seem a nice fella, but his lack of application on the pitch (except when playing former teams) was clear for all to see. A shame really.
Yes pace or stamina wasnt his strong point but as a number 10 do you really need that so much? For me his best ability was ball control, dribbling, could puck a pass (got plenty of assists) and wasnt bad at set pieces. I can remeber a ex barnsley manager playing him on the wing *shudder*
In the modern game if you're a number 10 who can't run then you need to be orders of magnitude better at football than George Moncur. He might have done alright 25 years ago, but there's not much space for luxury players these days unless they're really, really good.
