Sands of time and all that but my memory of it was a fairly small fee up front (£250k for sake of argument) then 50% of any profit. Barely a dint in the deficit and we’ve lost the one player who could get 20 goals in this league. Appalling business in my opinion.
It’s a symptom of the disaster of a season we have just had. Good player left with one year on contract earning wages we can’t afford in a league we’re not guaranteed to go up from. It’s appalling from a football perspective, but the only thing that made sense from a business perspective imo.
I look at it on the basis of how much would it cost to replaces directly. And to replace Someone of his proven ability would cost a hell of a lot more than what we’ve received. Like you say though they may be desperate for that money. Maybe we’re dependent on early business to keep trading who knows.
All I’m saying is that if we kept him this season and didn’t go up, not only would he leave for free but we’d have paid him 30k a month. I’m hoping we can get 4 top end of league one players for that budget.
We kept Mowatt & got to the play offs & any replacement for Woodrow will cost initially a fee & wages on top , to me we should have kept him & review in january , january is where desperate clubs pay silly prices for strikers & if we were in with a chance of going up we could have kept him , however according to some on here it is amazing we have received any money as they had totally written him off , quite strange really why some of our fans want rid of our better players , I can never understand it .
I’ve said it more than once on here, and here’s once more - Cole Stockton. Scores plenty and would be a good fit at this lower level.
Guess the argument is you don’t need that quality in League 1. I imagine the 20-goal scorers in L1 last year were on a fraction of what Cauley is on. If we’ve got anything over 500k, that’s fair business for me. Add net salary saving in region of 250, that’s saved us around 750k.
We didn’t. He was signed on a free transfer. Gauthier confirmed this on the live interview I did over lockdown.
We were discussing this at worksop yesterday and as a group we thought 750k was about right of course more would have been great but with only a year left it seems fair. It was time for Woody to move on and it frees up a fair chunk of wages.
One thing he did say was, there would be no fire sale Players will only be sold if the offer we receive is what we value them at. Whilst I can see Helik wanting a move away to further his international prospects, similar to how Styles has asked for a move, it gives me a bit more hope that we could potentially keep hold of Morris. At least until January.
Comes down to the Club’s definition of ‘value’ though dunnit. No disputing we need these salaries off the payroll. I suspect the Club’s acceptable valuation for our top players will generally still be some way less than ours
The club said. SOME players requested to leave. Styles for one. Others ?. (I'm guessing Palmer and Adeboyejo would be a couple). If that's the case let em go. If they feel they are better than league 1 and are nearly out of contract. 12 months eg. The other 2 mentioned are not better than L1 imo. But could possibly pick up a signing on fee and wages better than we were prepared to offer. As first choice players rather than bench warmers. Nothing worse than keeping someone who may not give of his best if unhappy.
Valuation and what people are prepared to pay is the issue fans tend to overlook. Some on here put Woodrow in the same bracket as Ivan Toney at one stage. Totally deluded, even when Woodrow was at his best.
