I used to apply for jobs to test myself too. I actually got the job at Medical Records at Barnsley Hospital and had to turn it down.
There’s some weird ways of selecting staff out there. It seems the NHS is a bit fixated on their own ‘values’. I’ve heard similar from others. Our selection process is v labour intensive for the candidate, but all of the info you need to pass is given to every candidate. So it’s a ‘fair’ system, but you really do need to have relevant experience/skills and understand the process pretty well too.
Yes it could be a psychometric questionnaire. We have to remember that any job has to be a good fit for the person to the role (not just task) and to the organisation. Equally for the individual they will want a good fit for them. Often organisations think its only about them, as per Stephens example.
I like the agency system of working on building sites. You get your chance with your qualifications and cscs card then at the end of the first day it's either "same time tomorrow pal" or "don't come back you're ****" from the site manager. Everybody knows where you stand and how it is.

It's good to hear that you sifted through the applications and not left it to a bot to look for key words.
In my division we always do a manual sift (some other departments use an outside contractor, but they expect more applications. However, we do clearly state the sift criteria, and add that if there's a large number of applications, we will do an initial sift on the lead criteria. In this case, the lead criteria was experience of data, advanced excel knowledge, using MI reporting to drive business (or something like that) and it's amazing how many people had carefully crafted a statement for a completely different job, just threw that in. Not a mention of anything from the lead criteria, or perhaps once mentioning they'd used MI to aid a decision. So along with a boatload of pre admin (to ensure no personal details etc) 3 members of staff had to read through over 100 applications, 80% of which were a complete waste of time.
