Remember watching the schoolboys against Liverpool in the 60s. About 28,000 there at Oakwell to see Jimmy Greenhoff, Alan Woodward, Alan Ogley etc overcome a 1-0 deficit from the first leg.
I was at the victory over Liverpool in the 1961 final. Jimmy Greenhoff was in the 4th form at Holgate Grammar School, when I was in the 1st form. Amazing crowd for a schoolboy game. I remember reading in the Chronicle years ago that Barnsley Boys were second only to Liverpool Boys in the total number of games they had won in the English Schools Trophy since its inception.
The 60s must have been a golden age for schoolboy football with big crowds turning up. We had organised trips to Wembley from Broadway and I went to a few England boys internationals. Crowds around the 70-80,000 mark were common then.
